The "Save our Bacon" Act has the right acronym. Senate Democrats can and should kill it.
Spend 15 minutes with pigs leading their lives, like @RosiesFS, and you will see they deserve decency, not cruelty.
Grateful to @NickKristof for his relentlessness here & elsewhere.
Here's what the pork industry doesn't want you to know about the way it sneaked a provision into the 2026 farm bill that would nullify ballot measures that improve animal welfare, while helping Chinese companies torture American pigs. The issue is personal to me, because we once raised pigs on our family farm, and I saw that these are not commodities but animals rather like dogs: smart with very distinct personalities. A naughty boy who punishes a single animal may be punished, but an adult who presides over the systematic abuse of hundreds of thousands of pigs as a business model is hailed as a visionary CEO -- and voters get that, and that's why they have backed laws that improve animal wellbeing. This is, remarkably, an issue that unites many liberals and conservatives alike; @TomiLahren, @Cernovich and @IngrahamAngle are among those who have been outspoken on this issue. I hope R and D members of Congress alike will stand firm, for the stakes are immense, with four pigs slaughtered around the clock on average all year. Here's a gift link to my piece: https://t.co/NWQbJK6JTc I welcome your comments.
the CEO of the autism clinic chain says "profit is like oxygen"--and he thinks that's helpful!
the money these vultures are snatching could be spent a hundred better ways across many more kids

If you want good schools and high-quality policing, we're going to have to change how we hire, retain, and discipline teachers and cops. Public sector unions aren't gonna like it.

Supporting great public servants--and removing lousy ones--matters for the quality of our schools, police & roads. In education, it also matters to swing voters, far more than many issues that obsess the commentariat. With @nicholas_bagley in @TheArgumentMag
Could not agree more — this is something I have been thinking about for a long time too. Working for the Dept. of Buildings, I saw first hand how high turnover is, especially of our fantastic inspectors, because the city could not compensate them enough for their often many…
I am rooting hard for Mamdani, but if he’s going to deliver better for less, he needs to be as tough on bureaucratic nonsense as he has been on billionaires. In @VitalCityNYC , I wrote about what that means. Link below.
This is one of go-to podcasts because it's got a Seattle flavor, but this one is terrific for all you ed policy types out there!
Delves into important issues of public service provision with education playing a prominent role.
This was a great discussion with @robertmgordon and the hosts for Blue City Blues about public sector unions, Democratic politics, and the future of our cities.
Mayor Mamdani has built a formidable team because of his charisma, values, and urgency. But even the most inspired appointments do not last forever. Reform of the civil service may or may not make a great video, but it will serve a great city. /end
Zohran Mamdani's couch cushions video was the best bit on government waste since Al Gore smashed a designer ashtray on David Letterman.
But if the mayor wants to save the big bucks, he'll need to fix NYC's broken civil service system. 1/x
Government must deliver for working people—and every dollar in our budget should work as hard as they do.
That’s why I directed every agency to cut waste and help close our budget gap.
Here’s some of what we found.
It's not every municipal role that pays off today. Alas, far from it, as @nicholas_bagley and I have written. Facing a deficit, Mamdani will need a tough & targeted approach to talent and pay. The city's unions will have opinions.
