250 years in, white supremacy is alive and well. They celebrated by polluting our skies, marching in our streets, and riding the public transit they spend their time defunding. The hypocrisy would be laughable if it weren’t so dangerous.
“This is not simply a blockade. This is an act of war.”
Illinois Rep. Jonathan Jackson demanded an end to the US blockade on Cuba in a press conference on Tuesday. Jackson condemned the severe medicine shortages caused by the blockade, as well as the lack of fuel Cuban hospitals faced, which has forced doctors to use flashlights on their phones to perform surgery.
The press conference was organized by National Nurses United, the country’s largest union of registered nurses.
For America's 250th, I read Frederick Douglass’ speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” on the House floor—for the first time in history.
His speech endures as a mirror & mandate for us all—to confront our inequities while fighting for an America as good as its promise.
#BREAKING: Velshi: You said to WaPo that taking money out of politics is the biggest issue right now. Why do you believe that?
Melat Kiros: “Well, first let’s talk about Medicare For All. I saw that the policy director for the National Nurses United spoke a few weeks ago about the concern that they are having for members of Congress who are cosponsors of legislation like Medicare For All, while also taking campaign donations from the very health insurance companies that would be effectively legislated out of existence, so it calls into question what kind of relationship, and what kind of motivation, are these donations playing in the roles of our members of Congress, and at the end of the day, if you’re taking money from the very interests, and very corporations that don’t want to see this kind of legislation passing, what we’re finding is that sometimes it’s not an immediate quid pro quo that these donations are resulting in, sometimes it’s that a seat is just being kept warm and legislation is not being progressed and fought for in a really meaningful way.”👊

Standing for humanity isn’t radical.
We can’t be represented by politicians who care more about pleasing AIPAC than fighting for their constituents.
Our tax dollars need to be spent building up our communities here at home, not illegal wars overseas.
New @LeverNews interview with @AbdulElSayed:
"Antisemitism exists and is a very dangerous force, but I also know that trying to meld the interests of Judaism and the Jewish people with the interests of a super PAC and a foreign government itself risks exacerbating antisemitism.
"I don't think Jewish people in Michigan or America want to be held accountable for what the Israeli government does because they share ethnicity or faith with the people who live in Israel...I find it deeply frustrating when people use antisemitic terms to attack the Jewish people because of what Israel and its government are doing."

Many are asking me what do I make of last night and progressive wins across our nation.
I say the era of cliches delivered with charisma and charm is over.
This is a time for courage.
Voters want to know where you stand on the hard issues and whether you will fight for change in an unfair and lopsided economic and political system.
Are you for single payer healthcare?
For taxing the wealth of billionaires?
For taxing capital like we tax work?
For no more wars?
For recognizing the genocide?
For taxing agentic AI more than workers?
For a real living wage?
For abolishing and replacing ICE?
For money out of politics?
This is not an age for triangulation or obfuscation.
FROM MELAT KIROS VICTORY SPEECH:
“We will not wait to abolish ICE & pass Medicare for All.”
“We will not wait to take politics out of the hands of big money, reject corporate PACs, and break the grip of dark money in our system.”
“And we will not wait to end the genocide in Palestine.”
Allowing states to bar transgender girls from sports targets a basic tenet of childhood: the freedom to play.
Transgender youth belong, like every other child. My office will continue to fight for every young person’s right to dignity, safety, and community.

The Supreme Court just struck down all spending limits for political parties.
This means parties can spend unlimited amounts of money in upcoming elections.
The Trump administration is assisting the Israeli government as it bombs children in Lebanon. In just 25 days, nearly 1000 more people have died while Congress lacks the courage to end U.S. participation in this invasion. We must pass the Lebanon War Powers Resolution today.
Tonight, I gave Notice of Intent to bring forth a Privileged Resolution to force a vote on releasing the names of Congressmen who used taxpayer funds for sexual misconduct settlements.
The Speaker has two legislative days to consider the timing of the vote. Stay tuned.
Democratic socialist Melat Kiros beat U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette in a Colorado House primary, a stunning victory for the first-time candidate against a nearly 30-year incumbent.

In January, our administration inherited a $12 billion budget deficit — a fiscal crisis greater than the Great Recession.
Today I am proud to announce that our balanced budget has cleared the final step and passed the New York City Council.
We balanced the budget by taxing the rich and making government more efficient. We did not balance this budget on the backs of working people, and we never will.
Every year that follows will build on these principles: Honest budgeting. Fiscal discipline. Transparent government. And an unwavering belief that working people deserve a government that delivers for them every day.
