As an AD, one of the hardest things I witness our coaches deal with is a parent wanting it more than their child. Coaches use offseason work ethic, skill, athleticism, and what is most valuable to the team when determining playing time.
Parents often hear from their child that the coach does not like them, that it is unfair, or that favorites are being played. In many situations, the harder truth is that the child simply does not love the sport as much as the parent does.
That can lead to parents fighting battles with coaches that their child should be learning to handle themselves. One of the most important lessons sports can teach young people is how to communicate, compete, handle adversity, and advocate for themselves.
Playing time is rarely about one conversation or one moment. It is usually about consistency, effort, preparation, attitude, and trust built over time.
This has become an ongoing trend in sports today. The athletes who grow the most are usually the ones who learn to accept coaching, respond to challenges, and take ownership of their role instead of relying on others to fight their battles for them.
Brandon Payne is amazing trainer. We have talked many times about the similarities of training NBA and NFL Players and the "dumbness" of "sports specific." Brandon also owns a @SHREDmillSpeed.
The Zoom action is one of the most popular actions in the game — but Alabama hit Purdue with the Turn Zoom wrinkle and it was lights out.
The best offenses don’t just run plays, they build in decisions that defenses aren’t ready to make.
This is what high-level offensive basketball IQ looks like on film.
Young athlete: “I don’t like to train in-season.”
LeBron James:
✔️ Lifts ON game days
✔️ Focuses on full body lifts (gives scheduling flexibility)
✔️ Rules to help him decide WHEN to lift based on schedule
✔️ He does something gym related daily
@dirtyheads watching YouTube video for Sound of Change…..went to the concert last July and didn’t hear this song. Feel like that song should be played EVERY time a concert is there!
@CFBDirect Is there a way to make injuries more realistic in Dynasty mode? There’s not consistency with them. You can have someone out with a foot fracture for 1 week and someone else is out with the same injury for the entire season.
@DipMetress Tell me how many players you see in this photo have their jerseys untucked? High schoolers too good to tuck in their jersey and “act” professional….
@mar5hallhoops As long as it’s been communicated weeks in advance. Because we give a schedule for practices to the players and parents at the beginning of the season! What is wild, is in the player tells you the day before or day of practice.
Nick Saban; Do we have ‘Show Dogs’ on the team, or do we have ‘Hunting Dogs’ on the team?
Hunting Dogs are focused on discipline, commitment, accountability, doing the right things and getting better.
Show Dogs are worried about how they look and playing time.
I have tested this theory on lifting for 13+ years.
The barbell is the best tool you can use to build the highest levels of strength in athletes:
▫️RDL
▫️Pulls
▫️Jerks
▫️Rows
▫️Bench
▫️Cleans
▫️Squats
▫️Deadlifts
▫️Snatches
Take these tools & do the following:
✅ Lift through full ROM
✅ Lift as fast as possible
✅ Lift in a rep range of 1-5
✅ Lift loads near maximal effort
Repeat this 3x/week year round & there is no question you will build serious strength.
My biggest advice to athletes…
Do the “simple,” exercises
Be ok w/ consistent routines
Embrace the basics done extremely well
Aim for marginal progression each week
Establish a good plan & stick to it
Put your head down & do it day by day, week to week, month after month
“Your role doesn’t matter.
Your commitment does.”
Champions don’t care what the role is; they care how well they perform it.
Your role on the team isn’t about recognition.
It’s about responsibility.
A parent asked me this exact question today:
“What can I do to minimize my son’s risk of injury to the best of my abilities.”
I gave it an answer in the moment, but then gave it more thought
It made me want to make this thread
