Recently, I decided I wanted to read every page of one of my favorite websites, @OurWorldInData.
I’m about halfway now.
Here are the 30 most surprising things I’ve learned about the world so far! 🧵
Standing with the Swedish democracy and freedom of speech. What someone says or does in Sweden is not the responsibility of the gov, the government's job is to ensure they -and you- have a safe space to say whatever you want.
You can't have democracy if you can't see or hear what you hate. Many of those who are burning the Swedish flag (In Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon etc) support radical militias burning and killing other Muslims while the Swedish government is giving those Muslims asylum. Who helps Muslims these days and who kills and displaces them, the Iranian Islamic regime or a gov like the Swedish one? The hypocrisy is deafening.
The 1st woman President of Nepal has refused to fulfil her constitutional duty to endorse a twice-tabled bill on citizenship rights. Her objection is not that it grants too few rights to women as compared to men—which it does—but because it grants women too many rights.
@Suhail@Suhail, Recently tested the browser in the EU. It is very impressive. The connection to US East from Berlin is also smooth.
Have you thought of a smaller plan (shared/team) with different pricing to make full use of the 8vCPU and 32GB hardware?
Amidst huge lobbying to reopen coal plants over existing nuclear plants (eg. in Germany) and stop the campaigns to restore forests worldwide, @FareedZakaria's take on climate solutions is simple: "The perfect should not be the enemy of the good."
In fighting climate change, we do not have to make a choice between half-measures now and full measures later.
The perfect should not become the enemy of the good. That should be the motto of every environmental group that wants to see actual, positive change today.
My take:
@ShinichiTatsumi@MethodsEcolEvol@ShinichiTatsumi Any plans to make the application open source?
We'd love to integrate it within TreeMapper, which is used by many restoration orgs to map new forests and share planting data publicly.

There's a way to make this war short. Avoid non essential driving and consumption of gas/petrol. A push for renewable energy and decentralized grids are helpful for any crisis.

@MadisonMills22@con060 @Quicktake So much is at stake for Gen-Z. I think everyone should also be talking about reducing voting age. That would drastically shift our political priorities.
@COP26 This is not a good NEWS. SDG 15.2 was established in 2015:
By 2020, promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally.
#ClimateEmergency
💯. The main priority of #COP26 should be to keep fossil fuel in the ground and accelerate the transition to renewable energy. With the current goals we’re on our way to over +3.0 degree Celsius.
"By 2020, [....] halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally" (SDG 15.2)
Agreed in 2015 by everyone.
Let's not just do the same things over & over again & expect a different result.

@cbcwatcher8 @stevem20@JKSteinberger@trilliontrees @cbcwatcher8 I don’t think any single activity alone will solve the climate crisis, but every solution has its role. If the world is serious, fossil fuels must be left behind. Forest and other natural ecosystems play different yet essential roles.

@AdamWelz @ProfEricColeman @YaleE360@elonmusk@trilliontrees@1t_org@CrowtherLab@salesforce@Benioff@wef@GretaThunberg Map isn’t translated 1:1 in restoration efforts. Many factors are taken in consideration for/by restoration projects. Monitoring is still a challenge awaiting scaleable solutions. Why conservation? Net tree loss is still ca. 10 B/year. And planting alone won’t solve the problems.
