Benson is an incisive pundit. But there is nothing conservative about deliberately creating motherless children. I pray Benson and those like him on the Right would consider what they are telling the world about how unnecessary they believe mothers (or if we’re talking about two women, fathers) are to the needs of children.

Because that is what they’re declaring when they create these children through the surrogacy process. That mothers and fathers serve no specific purpose.

PERSPECTIVE: I’ll say his name.

I’ve not commented on the Nolan Wells story because I have no idea what happened. Neither do you. It’s not stopped rank speculation and the most despicable kind of grifting imaginable. It is a tragedy that Nolan Wells is dead. By all accounts, he was a good kid. It’s also a tragedy that we’ve been reduced down to “teams” as a society, where we assume the worst of each other, absent any evidence.

It’s possible that Nolan Wells’ white friends were secretly plotting his demise for years as closet racists. A diabolical long con to lower his defenses. Very improbable, though. It’s also possible he decided to stay on Horn Island when they were leaving and then had a swimming accident. Much more probable.

That this has been turned into a white-black conflict without any indication that race had anything to do with it is a sign of serious sickness in our society. I see people whose ancestors fought hard for desegregation essentially calling for segregation now. It’s hard to wrap my brain around.

People like Al Sharpton want Nolan Wells to have been murdered. Their entire narrative demands it. Their ability to raise money off of it depends on it. They’re vultures feeding off of fear and history to exploit a tragedy. They’re exploiting a grieving family and community in the process.

Today Sharpton preached at Wells’ funeral about Cain and Abel. He is presupposing murder. I’ve seen other posts comparing Wells and Emmett Till, a young man lynched because of his race. Again, at present, there is zero evidence Wells was murdered and zero evidence that race played any part in his death. Grifters are purposefully tearing this country apart for lucre, for fat Go Fund Me campaigns.

And if it turns out there was no foul play, these hustlers will pack up their bags quietly and move on to the next manufactured scandal. Nolan Wells’ family deserves answers. Yes. But Nolan Wells’ friends deserve not to be treated like murdering members of the Klan, too.

Social media is sidelining rational voices and promoting race baiting on both extreme ends of the spectrum because the people who run these platforms have figured out that anger, fear and extremism sell. The more worked up you are, the more likely you’ll engage. The more you engage, the more time you spend on the platform. The more time you spend, the more money they make. Never forget that you’re the product. The cost is constructive social dialogue and the unwinding of our common social fabric.

I think Nolan Wells deserves better than to be used as a pawn in an agenda driven circus.
