"Beauty is more than just a cognitive event in our minds. Beauty moves us in ways which seem to imply there’s something more to it."

Nobel laureate @KarlDeisseroth came to neuroscience through words. His love of literature and writing drew him toward the human brain, and a required psychiatry rotation in medical school set him on the path to developing optogenetics. Here, he traces that journey.
BREAKING: Elon Musk says money will become irrelevant and future currency will be measured in power, mass and energy.
“I think currency will be measured in fundamental physics metrics like, you know, power, like wattage and tonnage, mass and energy.”
To succeed in the game of power, you have to master your emotions. But even if you succeed in gaining such self-control, you can never control the temperamental dispositions of those around you. And this presents a great danger.
After 21 days stop adding habits:
- Run 21 days of deliberate practice on 4-5 habits per day then go to autopilot
- Then ask which of those you are now doing naturally without effort
- Every 21 days you don't add new habits. You maintain the ones you built
- The habit literature explains how to form and break habits, not what to do once one is formed or whether it will persist

The students who feel worst about the material do best:
- Read the material 4 times and your confidence climbs with each pass. You think you know it. You don't
- Study it once then test yourself 3 times and you report low confidence and a low sense of mastery
- On the actual exam the exact opposite is true. The test group wins
- Straining for answers and getting them dead wrong is the part that works
- Testing yourself once to three times before the real test is far and away the best way to lock material into those circuits

It's easy to see the biases in other people's minds, but it is important to understand how our own biases shape our opinions and worldview. It is very difficult to see the outside world clearly if our minds constantly generate and believe these illusions. When we learn how to observe our minds without being trapped in any illusion, it becomes easier to understand everything, from history to economics and even biology.
In a culture that encourages us to avoid resistances and pressures, we can all imagine that we are amazing and worthy of adulation, when in fact we are simply avoidant and untested.
Now out: The updated edition of my book The Innovators: How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses, and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution. It has a new intro arguing how the "hands-on imperative" and the Ada Lovelace/Steve Jobs belief in human-computer partnership should rule in the era of AI. https://t.co/Jjw1JGE7b3
