Upon my third reading of RWH, I paused to reflect on a beautiful sentence from the book - “What emerged from our conversations is a heartening morality tale in which the good guys win.” @WilliamGreen72 - I salute you!
@connor_holly1@leeleathers@awilkinson@nivi Thanks this is super helpful to something I’ve been trying. I’ve been working on building a search engine for podcast transcripts. This could help me build a summary feature too!
@myfirstmilpod - wonderful podcast episode with @syedbalkhi!! In Ep476 @ShaanVP briefly explained the concept of “second derivative income”. Very insightful to hear that expanded! Fantastic framework and mental model to adopt! @thesamparr; thanks for an awesome one guys!
One of my favorite examples of life’s work:
In 1976, at the age of 58, Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy (Dr. V) started Aravind, an eleven bed hospital built to perform eye surgeries in India. Through constant iteration and optimization, Aravind would eventually cure blindness for millions of patients, at a tiny fraction the typical cost, and often at no cost to patients themselves. In his journal, in the 1980s, Dr. V. asked himself: “How do I become a perfect instrument?”
Despite being permanently crippled by rheumatoid arthritis at age 30, Dr. V worked on Aravind until his death at age 87. He was utterly devoted. He quietly changed millions of lives.
Reflecting on his work, he said “Intelligence and capability are not enough. There must be the joy of doing something beautiful…When we grow in spiritual consciousness, we identify ourselves with all that is in the world, and there is no exploitation. It is ourselves we are helping. It is ourselves we are healing.”
This is reporting notional derivative exposure.
I can buy 10k 390 $SPY puts expiring this Friday (each costing $0.02) for $200, and it’d give me $448,000,000 of notional exposure.
@shaneparrish I struggle with this a bit - @naval famously says read what you love until you love reading (has also said this on your podcast). How can we develop the filter and discriminate?
@AJButton2 The buyback can affect the EPS number, no? Isn’t that one of the significant parts of the financial engineering of buybacks? That’s been $AAPL’s strategy in recent times to “beat” EPS estimates.
