📘 Lately, I’ve been trying to become a student of Fixed Income Securities by Tuckman & Serrat. Maybe that's why @YouTube recommended me this brilliant @FinancialTimes film on government debt.
We often talk about the US debt-to-GDP crisis (currently over 120% that’s more than $34 trillion in debt!), but I had never paid much attention to the UK. The 2022 episode under Lis Truss @trussliz , where her government nearly blew up the gilts market, was a wake-up call. Only now do I understand why she had to go, and how much sway the so-called bond vigilantes still have.
🎯 The film frames that moment as a “gift” to the rest of the world: a cautionary tale of what happens when you push the bond market too far.
But what really hooked me was the narration by Russell Napier of @EdinburghLoM . If someone decides to make a full documentary with him as the narrator, I’m in. He brings a unique tone, equal parts sarcasm, dry humor, and sobering reality. 🥲
Here are a few Napier quotes from the video:
🖌 “These so-called vigilantes are back because they can see a world going forward where there is more inflation. My opinion on the vigilantes is that they will be assassinated.”
🖌 “Whether we live in democracies or dictatorships, the dictation will be to the vigilantes—not the vigilantes dictating to the governments.”
🗣️ “Some people recommend the radical approach of direct funding of the government by the central bank. But you don’t have to take that risk. The world is full of savings. You can abuse the savers long before you have to abuse the balance sheet of the central bank.”
This intriguing statement makes me wonder: Have there been historical instances where governments have, in effect, "abused the savers" by forcing the purchase of government bonds? If so, I'd be very interested to learn more. Are there any recommended articles, videos, or other materials that delve into such periods or mechanisms? Please share in the comments!
It’s fascinating, and a little unsettling. If you're into macro, debt dynamics, or central bank behaviour, this is well worth a watch.

A few weeks ago, I ran into @thorwebdev near Lau Pa Sat. Seeing his @supabase cap (thanks for the gift, @thorwebdev !), I assumed he was still at @supabase . Turns out, he had moved to @elevenlabs AI-powered voice cloning and text-to-speech solutions.
Fast forward to just recently, I was watching @lexfridman Podcast featuring Prime Minister @narendramodi . He is known for his powerful oratory in Hindi, so when I heard him speaking fluent English, I was genuinely stunned.
For a moment, I thought, "When did this happen?" But then I realised, this wasn’t dubbing. It was AI voice cloning by @elevenlabs . The accuracy, tone, and cadence made it sound just like him, making me question reality for a second.
AI is transforming communication in fascinating ways, opening up possibilities we never thought possible.
🚀 AI is making content more immersive and breaking language barriers in ways that feel almost magical!
Ever been caught off guard by AI voice cloning?

Just finished another epic @AcquiredFM podcast episode - this time on Visa! These episodes are so rich in detail that they typically take me 2-3 weeks to complete, but they're absolutely worth it.
Having spent 3+ years in banking working on payment systems like Request To Pay through PayNet (Payments Network Malaysia), cross-border QR payments connecting PayNow (Singapore) and DuitNow (Malaysia), and deep-diving into card authorization and settlement flows, I could connect all the dots while listening to Visa's incredible journey.
What fascinated me most was the Ben Gilbert' brilliant explanation of Visa's "envelope of value" concept. Here's how it breaks down on a $100 shoe purchase:
Merchant receives: $98.00
Issuing bank gets: $1.60
Acquiring bank takes: $0.20
Visa itself collects: $0.15-0.20
This brilliantly designed fee structure enables issuing banks to fund those rewards we all love, creating a system where everyone benefits - merchants get more customers, banks attract cardholders, and consumers earn points - all while Visa maintains 50%+ net margins processing billions of transactions with minimal variable costs. No wonder payment volume on Visa's network has compounded at an astonishing 17.3% annually for 51 years straight since 1971!
Anyone else hooked on business history podcasts? What episodes should I tackle next?

I recently listened to the Acquired podcast episode on Hermès and I’m still processing all the fascinating details! It’s an incredible story about corporate strategy, family control, and high-stakes finance.
Bernard Arnault and LVMH attempted to gain control of Hermès using some incredibly sophisticated financial instruments. I found particularly interesting the discussion of:
• Equity swap derivatives: Between 2007 and 2010, LVMH quietly built a 14.2% stake in Hermès using cash-settled equity swaps through three major banks (Société Générale, Natixis, and Crédit Agricole). These swaps allowed LVMH to gain financial exposure to Hermès shares without direct ownership, delaying disclosure until they converted them to physical shares in 2010. Shockingly, this meant LVMH was acquiring stock at an average price of €80.50, while the market price at the time was €176.20 a 54% discount! This maneuver completely blindsided Hermès and the market.
• H51 family defense: The Hermès family’s response was just as impressive. In December 2010, 52 family members pooled 50.2% of shares into H51, a special holding company with a 20-year lockup period and strict pre-emption rights. This move effectively blocked LVMH from increasing its stake and ensured Hermès remained under family control. What stood out to me was how regulatory exemptions helped the family defend their company, as the AMF (France’s financial regulator) approved this structure without requiring a mandatory tender offer.
• Share swap “win”: Even though LVMH didn’t succeed in taking over Hermès, Bernard Arnault still found a way to turn a setback into a win. In 2014, LVMH distributed its 23.1% Hermès stake to shareholders, but Arnault strategically swapped his own shares for full control of Christian Dior SE. This maneuver increased his family’s LVMH stake from 36% to 46.8%, avoided €2.1 billion in capital gains taxes, and further strengthened his grip over the world’s largest luxury empire.
I’m still trying to fully grasp all the nuances of this story, but it’s clear that both sides played a remarkable game of corporate chess. If you’re interested in:
• Mergers & Acquisitions
• Corporate Strategy
• Luxury Brands
• Family Businesses
…I highly recommend checking out the Acquired episode. I’d love to hear your thoughts and interpretations!
This is by far one of the best podcasts I’ve heard lately. The deep dive into Hermès’ history, strategy, and craftsmanship is truly fascinating. Highly recommend giving it a listen!

I recently received a message from a fellow professional who faced a challenge during a job interview, and I'm reaching out to gather some insights from all of you. Here's what they shared
"Yesterday, I interviewed for a senior Python position. With 12+ years of experience, I was able to answer questions about AWS services and the difference between concurrency and parallelism. However, I stumbled when asked to find the second largest element in an array.
Although I knew the approach, anxiety took over, and I couldn't write the necessary if-else clauses on the spot. This led to my rejection, and now I feel both weird and ashamed for failing at such a basic task despite my extensive experience.
How can I overcome the fear and anxiety that arise during interviews? My strategy was to solve as many problems as possible beforehand, but the sense of defeat is now eating away at my confidence."
Have any of you experienced something similar? How did you overcome interview anxiety and rebuild your confidence after a setback? Any tips or strategies would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your support!

Today was the first session of #LearnTogether#GrowTogether (#LTGT). We implemented a rudimentary SwiftUI app to fetch GitHub repositories. While working on it, we learned the basics of the Combine framework, including ObservableObject and @Published. We also explored the concepts of @State and @StateObject.
During today's session, I also learned about SE-0335 (introduce existential 'any') (https://t.co/pnpAOxiO76). When you define shapes as [any Shape], Swift handles the type erasure for you by wrapping each element in a type-erasing container, allowing the protocol's methods to be called at runtime without knowing the concrete type. Previously, I used to write TypeErasure Wrappers for this purpose.
All in all, it was a productive day!

I recently had an insightful conversation with a Senior Software #Engineer who reached out after #reading one of my #posts. We spoke for an hour, during which he shared some of his #challenges. He mentioned that the #dual#nature of people and the #politics of #corporate#life isn't for him. As an #introvert, he feels that his visibility in the office is impacted, and his #hardwork often goes unnoticed while more #vocal #colleagues take the credit. He also struggles with opening up to people, #anxiety, and the lingering effects of #childhood #trauma. During the #covid #lockdown, he tried #yoga, which turned out to be a positive experience, helping him form good habits in a supportive environment. However, he still deals with a lot of issues.
Many of us share similar #stories and problems without realizing it. Sometimes, just sharing can help. I've also #romanticized the idea of quitting everything and living on a farm. I imagined farming the land and selling produce to a nearby city, given the rising demand for #organic #farming. However, I soon realized that, for me, it was a form of #escapism and I wouldn’t be happy doing it full-time. That said, it might not be the same for everyone.
I first explored this idea back in 2009 while pursuing #engineering. The movie Samsara (2001), directed by @PanNalin , made a significant impact on me. #NSFW (https://t.co/2SgKyrwKSf)
But this post isn't about that. I want to understand how you deal with similar issues.
Are you going through something similar that's hindering your #progress? Do you want to discuss your thoughts on this?
I'm here to listen. We can schedule a one-on-one #call or #chat.

Could you share your reading habits? How do you prefer to read—do you immerse yourself in traditional books or opt for audiobooks? With the advent of book summaries, you can now finish a book in just 30 minutes. What are your thoughts on that?
Reading #Mastery by @RobertGreene , I was struck by how he emphasizes the importance of books in providing guidance and #mentorship, especially when a direct #rolemodel isn't available. Greene writes, "Books can serve as temporary #mentors, as 'The Improvement of the Mind' did for Michael Faraday."
https://t.co/ZgeDb8Llr5
In a podcast with @joerogan, @naval shared his approach to reading multiple books simultaneously, selecting based on his #mood and #interests. He believes in #skipping parts that don't captivate him and prefers to repeatedly read the best 100 books to deeply absorb their #wisdom. https://t.co/wXKrvryTqq
Different #techniques can enhance your reading experience, especially for non-fiction, technical books, and subject-specific texts. Do you practice any specific techniques that you'd recommend?
Some books, however, tell stories that touch your #heart deeply and defy structured reading methods. For instance, I read a short story by #RabindranathTagore called 'The Postmaster' last year, and to this day, I can feel my heartbeat quicken when I think of the little girl in the story. You can read it here - https://t.co/bVZfH2Vp8O

I woke up with a heavy sense of regret, only to realize it was just a nightmare, I had dreamt I started smoking again. In previous posts, I've discussed my struggles with building new habits. Today, I want to discuss the most challenging, emotionally and mentally draining experience I've faced, quitting smoking.
The last cigarette I smoked was in November 2021, around my birthday. That decision marked the beginning of a life I am now happy with, a cigarette-free life. The journey was long and filled with setbacks. Here were my justifications over the time -
•"I only smoke one or two cigarettes a day."
•"I only smoke when I'm stressed or tense."
•"I only smoke when I'm drinking or having fun with friends."
•"I only smoke the smaller, thinner cigarettes to cut down."
•"I only smoke half a packet a day."
•Eventually, it became a pack a day.
Many tried to help. Dipen gifted me a book, 'Allen Carr's Easy Way to Quit Smoking Without Willpower' but I resisted & nothing helped. The whole idea of quitting seemed overwhelming. Defeating addiction is a tough battle. Quitting smoking not only improved my health but also my professional focus and resilience.
I’d love to hear your story. Together, we can support each other in overcoming our toughest challenges.

Big win! Lay's India to reduce palm oil usage!
Last month, I made a video showcasing how Lay's India uses palm oil but Lay's USA does not use Palm oil!
After a lot of public pressure, Lays India has set a public statement that they have begun the process to replace palm oil in their Lays!
After Lays stops palm oil, it will also put pressure on all other brands like Bingo, Haldiram to potentially replace palm oil!
This is a major victory for the health of all Indians!
Let us all unite and keep fighting to make India healthy!
