@JulianKJarboe@dialectits Yep, i’m a full-on throwback too! HoJo’s ice cream was the draw. People came in for elaborate sundaes and you’d have to make them for tables of stoned Sarah Lawrence students. Once my tip was a guitar pick. The lines were out the door for shitty fried clam all you can eat nights.
@dialectits@JulianKJarboe The summer of my first year of college (1976) i worked the 8 pm-4 am shift at the HoJo’s in Yonkers right off the NYS thruway exit. I was told they had to hire me because several people had quit after being shut in the walk in freezer during a robbery.
I was threatened at a NIDA conference on cannabis about 10 years ago to stop tweeting the facts about their crazy anti-cannabis slides. Told I would never receive a dollar of funding from them again - and I didn’t.
Scientific discussion should never be suppressed. We must be skeptical, we must ask if there are biases from funding sources or political agendas, and in this day and age, the veracity of references and supporting data.
I stand with the scientists. We must speak out and do something when the public will be harmed.
The screwworm program wasn't charity, it was a $10 million fence that kept a billion-dollar problem from eating our own livestock alive. That's the thing with most USAID funding: it looks like "aid," but it's really cheap self-defense. Solve a problem there, and it never lands on our doorstep. But sure, let a bunch of guys who can't define DEI without Googling take a chainsaw to it. They didn't stop to ask, "Will this cut hurt us too?" Unless that's the point, burn it all down and call it efficiency.
As usual our inept agriculture secretary, blaming the Biden administration as usual, instead of offering a solution to the problem they created.
Texan here
A screwworm infestation is a nightmare for cattle, causing horrific wounds and economic devastation. For Texas, the situation has escalated dramatically in the last 24 hours with the first confirmed case of New World Screwworm (NWS) in over 60 years! This could have been avoided!
Infested animal can kill a cow in less than two weeks.
Treatment is extremely difficult and time-consuming, requiring the painful removal of every visible larva and deep disinfection of the wound. Ranchers no longer have much experience with this labor-intensive process, and there is currently no approved pharmaceutical treatment to make it easier.
This has triggered a massive economic threat. The USDA estimates that a widespread outbreak would drain an astonishing $1.8 billion from the Texas economy alone in livestock deaths, labor, and medication expenses.
How will this affect you? Tightening supplies will drive already high beef prices higher.
In my 30+ years as a medical writer and conference attendee, i have never imagined anything like this would happen. Video: Police Tussle With Diabetes Experts at ADA Meeting | MedPage Today https://t.co/PKyj0ok2uA
I had 20 patients in my Pediatric War Injuries Clinic today, for follow-up care.
Of the 20 children, Israel had killed one or both parents of 19 of them.
Starting this month, more than 900 deep-sea ocean sensors will be pulled out of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans off the coast of Washington, Oregon, Alaska, North Carolina and Greenland. https://t.co/jmm86WQNcY
They served people maggots. People stopped eating.
Now the plan is to strap them to beds & shove tubes down their throats.
They couldn’t be bothered to feed them humanely - but forced medical procedures? No problem.
This is what torture looks like. #ShutDownDelaneyHall
This is what a rigged system looks like.
If you paid $1 in federal income taxes last year you paid more than Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, KFC, PayPal & Honeywell.
Trump enabled these corporate tax dodgers to shift their profits to offshore tax havens in Malta, Singapore & Switzerland.
Please stop. I don’t want an AI summary of my Google search. I don’t want an AI summary of the text message from my friend at work. I don’t want an AI summary of the email I’m about to read. Please just stop.
This photo of Andy Kim in the moments before ICE gassed everyone at Delaney Hall is going into the history books.
We need more of this from our electeds.
“It’s immoral to be privileged in ways that others aren’t” is a deeply funny statement from the richest man on earth personally responsible for the deaths of millions of children
There is not a single mention of Gaza in the 192 page DNC autopsy report. As someone who campaigned in Michigan and Wisconsin, let me tell you- one of the main reasons we lost was our blank check to Israel while they committed a genocide.
Our party must put human rights first.
@simplesarahbear@LauraMiers You are probably correct. People do not understand how dangerous sinus infections can be. The infection can cross from the sinus into the brain.
