When I first started studying permaculture, I was confused too, and I thought we would be better off buying seed starting mix (organic, of course), because it seemed that:

- Seed starting mix is a special soil and hard to make
- Seeds need a nutrient-poor substrate to germinate

- The design of the seed tray doesn't matter for raising a healthy seedling - only the quality of the mix does

All three statements are false. Having the skill to make your own seed starting mix should be part of any sustainable practice.
