Strengthening technical capacity in the maintenance, servicing, and calibration of survey and geodetic equipment is essential for improving the quality, reliability, and sustainability of surveying work across the region.
Learners from Ardhi University completed a two-week training focused on building hands-on competencies in survey instruments calibration, maintenance and handling, which will enhance the longevity of instruments and the reliability of field results.

In collaboration with the County Ministries of Agriculture in Kericho, Kisumu, Muranga, Kitui, Garissa, Kwale, TaitaTaveta, Kilifi,Tana River and Homa Bay counties, RCMRD has launched the African Agriculture Adaptation Atlas (AAAA) knowledge products (factsheets, bulletins, gender responsive enterprise design, and feasibility reports)- to support climate-informed agricultural planning and decision-making at the county level.
Developed jointly with county agricultural stakeholders, the knowledge products under the #AAAA project provide insights that help guide climate-resilient agricultural investments, improve planning, and strengthen evidence-based decision-making at the county level.

🎉RCMRD and the Maritime Organisation for Eastern, Southern and Northern Africa @MOESNA_67 have signed an MoU to strengthen collaboration in hydrography, maritime safety, and the sustainable development of the Blue Economy.
The partnership establishes a formal framework for consultation, data and knowledge exchange, and joint action to enhance navigational safety, marine environmental protection, and hydrographic capacity across Eastern, Southern, and Northern Africa.
Through this cooperation, the two institutions will jointly support member States in improving hydrographic services, aligning with international standards, strengthening capacity building, mobilizing resources, and advancing research and training initiatives.
1/2. Following a successful two-day high-level Symposium, we have officially kicked off a 3-Day Regional Training on Space Technologies for Disaster Management designed to translate strategic commitments into operational skills.
The hands-on sessions bring together project managers, value-added providers, early-warning specialists, and remote-sensing analysts to strengthen real-world application of space-based solutions in disaster risk management.

📍RCMRD has launched a Disaster Risk Management Strategic Plan to support its member States, many of which face some of the world’s highest exposure to climate-related hazards.
With disasters increasing in frequency and intensity-compounded by rapid urbanization, population growth, environmental degradation, and socio-economic vulnerabilities-the Strategy will prioritize the use of geospatial technologies, to reduce disaster impacts and strengthen resilience.
It will focus on enhancing technical and infrastructure capacity and advancing action across the full disaster risk management cycle, while aligning with key global and regional frameworks such as the #ParisAgreement, the #SendaiFramework, the #SDGs, the Early Warnings for All initiative, the #AfricaStrategyfor DRR, and the #WindhoekDeclarationonDRR.
Regional Symposium 2026 | Space Technologies for Humanity
Earth Observation (EO) satellites and space-based technologies are transforming disaster preparedness, early warning, and response. Yet, many countries still face challenges in fully leveraging this data for effective disaster risk management.
RCMRD, with support from @UN_SPIDER@UNOOSA and @ZFLbonn , University of Bonn, is convening this high-level symposium in Nairobi, Kenya, bringing together policymakers, practitioners, UN agencies, researchers, civil society, and the private sector to explore how space technologies can be mainstreamed into national and regional development agendas.
Supported by UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction - Africa @UNDRR_Africa and @Esri , the event focuses on policy, partnerships, financing, and governance to ensure space data reaches the communities that need it most.
Success Story | Kakamega County
Kakamega County has actively disseminated African Agriculture Adaptation Atlas (AAAA) knowledge products through key county platforms, including departmental management meetings to inform policy development, an Agriculture Extension Policy Workshop, workplace performance contracting sessions held in January to set annual targets, and a field day in Mumias East.
This targeted dissemination directly influenced planning and investment decisions. The county increased its crop protection budget from KES 5 million to KES 10 million, supported the establishment of a poultry hatchery after poultry emerged as a priority value chain, influenced funding allocations for KDCC and Malava Dairy, guided the setup of the Fula Maize Milling Plant, and strengthened livestock vaccination programmes. The Atlas also supported the identification and prioritization of key value chains, including coffee and poultry.
The integration of AAAA insights into county planning and budgeting processes has led to increased agricultural investment planning and prioritization, with clear policy and budget impacts that demonstrate the value of evidence-based, climate-smart decision-making at county level.
As part of commemorating World Wetlands Day, we had the opportunity to visit the Merire Wetlands in Isiolo County and participate in a tree-planting activity to support the conservation of this important landscape.
The Merire Wetlands are especially significant as they form the source of River Merire, a lifeline for local communities, wildlife, and ecosystems downstream. Activities like tree planting help strengthen the wetland’s ability to sustain water flows, protect biodiversity, and support livelihoods.
The visit reinforced the value of practical, on-the-ground actions in safeguarding fragile ecosystems and ensuring they continue to serve both people and nature.
