I have never known or felt such depths of sadness and pain.
The horrific assault on Israel is a deeply depraved and evil one. Hundreds of innocent people were robbed of their lives in an instant including mothers, babies, and the elderly. Many were reportedly raped, murdered, and spirited away into Gaza as captives. Yes, there was—and still is—a deep vacuum of leadership. But the vacuum of truth and love in the quest for peace across lands and peoples is an even greater one.
This morning I heard from a friend who shared his son’s message from the front lines, that the teams on the ground are committed to preserving, living, and dying by the values that are core to our Nation, values of “humanity, morality and mutual responsibility.” Other friends and family are sharing that Israel's protest movement is now fully engaged with augmenting the infrastructure required to assist those on the ground: cooking meals and packing clothes and blankets, providing medical care and mental support. That is the Israel I grew up in. Truth, loyalty, empathy, and co-existence even—and especially—in the face of conflict; all were part of our M.O. growing up. That was my Israel. And I long for those values to prevail.
With roots in Ukraine and shoots in Israel, the tree of my life—and the lives of so many like me—are like curled willows, weeping and longing for amity. My heart beats with and for those who have lost their loved ones: I stand with you.
New preprint with our collaborators Ping and Huanghe. Very interesting mechanisms underlying absence epilepsy.

@Magnetic_Megan@scrippsresearch Many congrats Megan!! Best wishes with your work at this beautiful place! I’ve moved to Carlsbad last year and often visit Torrey Pines.
Excited to announce the publication of our study on the architecture of the ratGAT1 in the cytosol-facing, GABA bound state @NatureSMB. Brilliant effort @SmrutiR60158682 and well supported by @DeepthiJoseph @ArchishmanDakua @AthreyaArunabh

We determined the structures of human UCP1 in apo, ATP-bound, and DNP-bound states. (https://t.co/D5BavNmElI) Congratulations to Yunlu on another two-author paper!
Our paper is finally published today! https://t.co/bvZ6kAVZw5
We captured the open-state structure of the cold sensor TRPM8 and illustrated the channel activation mechanism by cooling agonist and PIP2. Credit to Joana @joana_gcc for the amazing illustration below.
Excited to share our latest work profiling m6A in single cells. We find that mRNAs have many more sites than previously thought and that most sites are found in a low proportion of cells. Fantastic effort led by postdoc Matt Tegowski! https://t.co/fxA8U3JkZE
BREAKING🎄 The 6th preprint from G2P-Japan - #Omicron is less infectious and pathogenic than #Delta and even an early pandemic SARS-CoV-2 in infected hamster model. 1/5
Excited that our first SARS-CoV-2 RNA-targeting paper is out in @ScienceAdvances! Hopeful it will contribute to the search for new #COVID19 antivirals & targets as well as appreciation for #RNA targeting with small molecules and #teamscience! ⚗️🔬🧪🧬💊

Check out our two new approaches to single-molecule protein sequencing using a proteasome-nanopore!
A full protein can be unfolded and threaded at a controlled speed, or chopped and (eventually) read in pieces!
Amazing work from postodc S. Zhang
