NEKEMIA BANANUKA (1920-1972)
He was a prominent Ugandan civil servant and political figure from Ankole. He served as the Secretary-General/Administrator General of the Ankole district administration during the early post-independence period and was considered an influential leader in western Uganda.
This gentleman was the first Munyankore to build a storied House in Ankole which he named "Omugabe Nankiza ki?". His house still stands to-date in Ruharo, Mbarara.
He has a road named after him called "Bananuka Drive" in Mbarara city. He represented Rwampara County in 'Omu Ishengyero' aka Ankole Parliament.
Bananuka (Bananuka Drive named after him)
He is remembered for organizing over 100 men to defecate around the Omugabe's palace (Mugaba) and bringing the Ankole Kingdom to an end (an accusation that was not verified), together with his Colleagues like Kesi Nganwa (of Nganwa High), Muntuyera ( Muntuyera High ), Rev Eliakimu K. Kamujanduzi... fought for equality of Bairu against Bahima oppression in Ankole. They set up schools, churches, saccos, & transformed lives of 1000s of Banyankore.
During the regime of Idi Amin, Bananuka disappeared and was widely reported to have been killed in 1972. Several historical accounts state that he and some of his sons were murdered during the political repression of that period.
He was brutally killed at a place called Ahakafunjo along Ibanda road alongside his three sons in September, 1972 during Amin's regime.

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is escalating, with cases spreading across provinces and into neighbouring Uganda.
The @IFRC_DREF has already mobilized CHF 2 million to support the Red Cross of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in responding to the outbreak.
In Uganda, where a Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease outbreak has been confirmed, an additional CHF 521,073 has been allocated through the IFRC-DREF to support preparedness and response efforts over the next six months.
This support will help strengthen community-based surveillance, risk communication and community engagement, infection prevention and control, safe and dignified burials, psychosocial support and emergency referrals.
Together, these DREF operations are helping communities access reliable health information, detect cases early, reduce transmission risks and protect vulnerable people from the health and socio-economic impacts of Ebola.

“Epidemics start and end in communities. What is urgently required is scaling up the work at the community level and this is what the DRC Red Cross and the @IFRC are doing.”
Speaking to @BBCNews from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dr Petra Khoury @petra_khoury, Global Health Director at the IFRC, warned that the outbreak remains out of control and called for urgent investment in locally led response.
She highlighted the critical role of DRC Red Cross @Croix_Rouge_RDC volunteers, who are engaging communities door to door, sharing trusted health information, and helping counter misinformation in an extremely challenging environment.
As Dr Khoury underlined, outbreak response cannot rely on cycles of panic. Long-term investment in community preparedness and resilient health systems is essential to prevent crises from escalating.
Uganda will no longer allocate government funds for the organisation of public holiday events such as Women’s Day, Labour Day, and Independence Day starting in the 2026/27 financial year, according to the Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury, Dr. Ramathan Ggoobi.
