What you are actually doing here is to bribe nokia to put these jobs into Canada by paying hundreds of thousands of dollars per job from taxpayer money. What this does is to lower the cost basis of nokia per employee. This has been going on for decades, called FDI which all civil servants think is a good thing. I spent a lot of time explaining to civil servants in ottawa that its not good for our economy that American and Oversees branch offices can employ Canadians at half the cost to all the canadian companies around them due to these subsidies. We should not do them at all, they are toxic, at least in the tech sector.
It's never meat to be this way, but the situation that very often arises is: It's strictly worse inside of Canada to be a Canadian company compared to a company headquartered everywhere else.
This is a bad situation, because the fruits of the subsidized labor will accrue to the wealth of other countries and not Canada. It's tax payer money invested into locking up scarce high tech talent in jobs where they no longer contribute to the Canadian economy directly. Why
You can keep telling yourself this, but you're simply wrong. I'm a left-leaning liberal who's fiercely anti-authoritarian, and if you couldn't deduce that from my work you haven't understood a word of it.
I'm not an ideologue. I mistrust ideologies. I've never met an ideologue who wasn't prepared to deny a bit of inconvenient truth to keep their world view intact and I include ideologies with which I find myself in broad sympathy. On the other hand, I am an idealist. I believe in human beings. We are undeniably capable of terrible acts, but the evidence is that we are astoundingly collaborative and mutually supportive, especially when times are hard.
My values haven't changed; what's changed is the political landscape. What was once my natural home (a pragmatic centre-left party focused on dealing with economic disparity, championing social liberalism and equal rights) is now dominated by an illiberal, identity-based strain of politics I consider elitist, harmful and out of touch with the day-to-day concerns of regular people, particularly women (and I've still lived more than half of my life as a non-wealthy woman, and some of that time was spent in poverty).
There are women with whom I make common cause in the TERF wars I disagree with on other things. Within obvious limits (sucking up to literal Nazis) I don't particularly care about their personal politics. The reality is that there's currently an assault on women's rights unparalleled in my lifetime, and it's coming from both left and right. If ever there was a time for women across the political spectrum to come together, it is now.
In 1968, Sidney Poitier was at a press conference at the height of his career.
He made it very clear how he felt about the press.
Funny that I had to find this on a discarded film reel with 1000s of books, Microfiche and films.
Now you can see it.
The biggest brain drain in the world is the one from Canada to the US.
As a result, the biggest and most successful mafia in the world isn’t the PayPal Mafia in America but the ex-Canadian Mafia in the US.
From Berkshire to SpaceX and many companies in between, there are so many of us, that have left Canada for the US to try our luck.
If Canada would demonstrate even a small modicum of interest in being a meritocracy, many of us would have stayed.
One of the hardest lines a leader has given in years…
NYC Mayor Adams:
“It's despicable that schools would allow another country's flag to fly in our country. Blame me for being proud to be an American. We're not surrendering our way of life to anyone.
Imagine being the President of the United States and waking up today…
You’re told that every single day for the last 3+ years, thousands of unknown, unvetted migrants have illegally crossed our border and are being released into the country.
Millions and millions of people in just a couple of years under your term. It’s gotten to a point where states, politicians and Americans across the political spectrum are demanding action and begging for help.
City shelters are full, budgets are being cut, US citizens feel unsafe and many illegal migrants are being arrested for crimes including theft, drugs and even murder.
Imagine you’re the President and you’ve been made aware of this national crisis every single day… and you just do nothing.
Most people would react with shock and urgency.
“How could this be happening? Seal the border! Send the national guard down there!”
But no… nothing. Not even an effort.
In fact, not only has President Biden done absolutely nothing with his own Executive Authority, but he has actually ordered his administration to sue Texas and block them from attempting to stop the mass illegal immigration on their own.
He then blames it on not having more money or resources from Congress, even though that would do absolutely nothing to stop this crisis.
What my Democrat friends need to understand is that you could have a million more border agents and endless funding, but if the plan and policy is still to let them cross the border illegally and release them into the US, nothing will change.
That would actually just speed up the disaster that is currently happening and encourage even more illegal immigration. More funding and resources for the same broken policy is not a solution.
It’s truly hard to comprehend what is happening. It’s an absolute failure of leadership and I’m honestly not sure how it isn’t treason at this point.
As you may have heard, four @Harvard alums would like to run for the Board of Overseers in the Spring election which begins April 1st.
Their vision: Renew Harvard's leadership, defend free speech, protect students, and fix mismanagement.
Their platform can be found here:
https://t.co/A5xdyx2PN5
and their bios can be found on the bottom of the Renew Harvard web page.
In order for them to be on the ballot, they need 3,200 alumni to nominate them by January 31st, which is only 17 days from now.
Please nominate them now so you don't forget. It takes fewer than five minutes even if you have to renew your password, as I did, as I had forgotten mine.
All you need is the list of candidates, their Harvard affiliation, and their date of graduation, all of which can be found below:
Nominate ALL FOUR candidates before Jan 31 using your alumni login at:
https://t.co/U9qX9p1Dbb
Alec Williams, Harvard Business School, 2017 @alecwilliams208
Zoe Bedell, Harvard Law School, 2016
Logan Leslie, Harvard and Radcliffe College, 2015 @LoganLeslie
Julia Pollak, Harvard and Radcliffe College, 2009 @juliaonjobs
By nominating them now, you will have four additional choices to vote for at the election beginning April 1st until May 14th, 2024 at 5pm.
The other candidates for election have been chosen by the incumbent board and/or administration so only these four represent fresh blood and new perspectives.
In the election, you can decide to vote for some, all or none of them, but it is critically important to get them on the ballot so you have the option of voting for them.
I think they are all outstanding. I have known Alec Williams, a Navy Seal still on active duty in addition to his day job as an investor for a family office, for many years.
Alec was a Princeton grad and got his JD at Yale Law School and HBS degree contemporaneously, while also doing tours of duty in Afghanistan.
The other three I met on a Zoom recently. Their resumes speak to their excellence.
They are all best described as exceptional. They are all military veterans and/or continue to do tours of duty in addition to their careers, which include an Assistant U.S. Attorney, an investor, an owner/operator of small businesses, and the Chief Economist of Zip Recruiter.
They were all academic superstars at Harvard as well as Yale Law School, Princeton, a Supreme Court clerk for Justice Kagan, you get the point.
They will be doing a real campaign so you can get to know them better over the next few months before the election.
I strongly urge you to nominate them. You can make the decision whether to vote for them once the election begins and you know more about them and their platform.
Thank you for helping save Harvard!
A bipartisan demand from @EliseStefanik and @RepMoskowitz for the removal of Presidents Gay, Magill, and Kornbluth.
Consider the severe reputational damage the three continue to inflict on our most important American institutions of higher learning for each hour they continue to serve in their respective roles.
Their brief tenures in office need to end now. Look how much damage each has done in only six to 18 months.
This moment in history creates an opportunity for a complete reboot of the philosophies, ideologies, politics, bureaucracy, and restrictions on free speech that led to the current situation.
This is not just about antisemitism. The problem is much deeper and more entrenched. Antisemitism is the canary in the coal mine who dies as the light of democracy is at risk of being snuffed out.
And it is not just about the universities. DEI and the related politics, violations of basic American principles, and the restrictions on free speech and expression have invaded our government institutions, non-profits, and Corporate America under the guise of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
These words have been weaponized to achieve power and political objectives for certain favored groups at the expense of others. There is nothing fair, inclusive, or diverse about this movement.
Similar movements have succeeded in other countries many times over a long history.
The United States has been a refuge for those who have fled once democratic regimes that were taken over by these movements.
If we don’t work to preserve our democracy, be forewarned, there will be no other place to go.
One of the most counter intuitive correlations I’ve seen is:
Wealth : Speed of response
Mid level employees usually take days to respond. Mark Cuban once replied to my cold email in 20 minutes. I have a small sample size but it’s almost always true.
A female GPS-tracked falcon flew from South Africa to Finland. In 42 days she flew over 10,000 km. That's 230 km per day. What have you achieved in the last 42 days? Source: https://t.co/5vsQb4LR5x
Given the moves by Fox and CNN news today with the firings of Don Lemon and Tucker Carlson, I think what we have is mainstream media realizing that change is needed. People don't want to be mislead by news stations. They also don't want misogynistic viewpoints to flourish.
As much heat as Elon Musk takes from a lot of people, some rightfully so, I do believe that ultimately his intentions with Twitter are good. Everyone may not view them as being good, but he does.
Elon wants to allow for free speech while also allowing for the community to fact-check any misinformation. For those of you who have not had a chance to check out community notes, I highly recommend doing so. They, in my opinion, are a really viable means for fact-checking.
I believe the community note model can also be extended for things like hate speech, misogynistic remarks, etc. Let the community help decide on things more than any one individual at Twitter.
Personally I like community notes because anyone who tells me that my tweets are "Fake News," I can simply tell them to "community note" them.
Transparency in social media companies is rare, but is essential. That is why, in my opinion, this is historic and really great to see. Transparency helps keep people honest and minimize undue influence from politics and money.
The implications of this leak May arguably rock Parliament like we’ve never seen before. As a hot war took place on Europe’s continent, Russian hackers, believed to working for Putin, had access to one the U.K’s top officials phone for over a year. This is the tip of the iceberg.
