Macron’s Red Line in Syria Means Nothing

France is trying to shield terror group SDF/YPG after the U.S. pullback, but Macron’s leverage is limited.

He personally tried to mediate between SDF commander Mazloum Abdi and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, arranging a call to prevent an attack on Ayn al-Arab, which was “encircled by the Syrian army.”

When al-Sharaa did not answer, Macron was reportedly furious.

He warned Damascus that “France will not tolerate a massacre in Kobane” and that it “will not abandon the Kurds,” even as Paris pressures them to accept “very significant concessions.”

French intelligence has quietly helped, placing bases “on alert,” but military action remains “an unthinkable option.”

A former official calls abandoning them “a moral failure,” saying France “subcontracted our security to the Kurds for fifteen years.”

“France has no right to say ‘thank you’ and ‘goodbye’ like the Americans,” a former senior DGSE official said.

For now, “the Kurds can now count only on themselves.”

France has reduced its own presence as well, leaving only a few personnel in SDF/YPG areas while repositioning most of its forces to Erbil, Iraq.

These are identity cards of female detainees who were imprisoned in Al-Aqtan Detention Center, north of Raqqa, which was operated by the terrorist PKK militias (SDF).

🚨 Urgent | Child Prisoners

Children under the age of 18 were detained by the SDF militias (PKK terrorist organization) in Al-Aqtan Prison, north of Raqqa, Syria, on so-called “terrorism” charges.

Detaining minors, criminalizing children, and imprisoning them under fabricated security accusations constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and basic human rights principles.

Such practices amount to war crimes and systematic abuse against civilians and children, and require immediate international investigation and accountability.

The 21 men weren’t fighters, they were civilians newly released from an #SDF prison in #Kobani. They were executed by #SDF fighters after being rounded up while walking home.

Their families are now coming forward, including 59yr-old Taha al-Aboud’s.

Documentation of the Killing of At Least 22 Civilians, Mostly by Snipers, at the Hands of the SDF in Raqqa Governorate on January 18

Damascus – The Syrian Network for Human Rights @snhr
On January 18, 2026, Raqqa Governorate witnessed a large escalation in military operations, represented by the outbreak of armed movements of a tribal and popular nature against the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in a number of villages and towns of the governorate and neighborhoods of Raqqa city, including the western countryside, the southeastern countryside and the city center. Tribal fighters managed to seize control of multiple areas and locations, while the Syrian Democratic Forces blew up key bridges at the city's entrances. During these events, snipers belonging to the Syrian Democratic Forces were positioned on the roofs of buildings and directly targeted civilians, resulting in deaths and injuries among the residents, including civilians who did not participate in the fighting, coinciding with a partial withdrawal of elements and leaders from the same forces. It is worth noting that these developments coincided with military operations by the Syrian army in areas controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces in the Aleppo countryside, its control over the cities of Deir Hafer and Maskana, and its approach to the borders of Raqqa Governorate.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights documented, in a preliminary count, the killing of at least 22 civilians, including 3 children, by the Syrian Democratic Forces in Raqqa Governorate, during the events that took place in the governorate on Sunday, January 18, 2026. The Network verified that all the victims documented in this count did not participate in the clashes or in the attacks by tribal fighters on the Syrian Democratic Forces’ positions.
According to the SNHR’s field monitor in Raqqa, and based on reliable local sources, the patterns of killing targeting documented civilian victims were as follows:
· 12 civilians killed by sniper fire.
· 5 civilians, including a child, killed by direct gunfire.
· 2 children killed by ground shelling targeting residential areas.
· 2 civilians killed by a suicide drone strike.
· 1 civilian abducted by members of the Syrian Democratic Forces on January 18, 2026, and found dead the following day.

SNHR was also able to identify the locations of the documented civilian deaths so far as follows:
· Raqqa City: 12 civilians, including one child.
· Tabqa City/Western Countryside: 5 civilians, including two children.
· Al-Karama District/Eastern Countryside: 1 civilian.
· Al-Jadidat Village/Eastern Countryside: 1 civilian.
· Al-Hawas Area/Eastern Countryside: 1 civilian.
· Hazima Road/Northern Countryside: 1 civilian.
· Near Al-Aqtan Prison/North Raqqa: 1 civilian.

The YPG/PKK's tunnel and hill defense lines in Ayn al-Arab, or Kobani as they call it, are designed to repel attacks from the north, east, and west. The Syrian army, however, is attacking from the south, and it is impossible for the YPG/PKK to resist.
