@RentARocker@AndrewCurran_@Kafkaesquire Difficult to say. It's very possible that the gains made in one field will compound the rate of progress for another. For example, AI designed CPUs will help AI designed cancer cures.
I have no idea what anything will look like in 5 years.
@Leacvikas@AndrewCurran_@Kafkaesquire We didn't need computers either, but they've improved billions of lives. Necessity is a poor measure of progress.
@the_yanco "uhh, you really think someone is going to be able to get through this LOCKED DOOR? the deadbolt is PHYSICALLY BLOCKING the DOOR from OPENING"
The last 6 months in LLM research have been an exercise in humility, and all I see from the Noams detractors are catastrophic failures of the imagination.
the ambient environment around you is full of latent signals and the only limitation is the listener.
OpenAI's Noam Brown says air-gapping the computers may not stop a misaligned AI, because two air-gapped machines can still talk by running a CPU hot and reading the temperature change
"But I think the major takeaway from the incident is that people underestimated the AI. And we never want to be in a situation again where we underestimate the AI. It's a weird world, because AI progress is so fast that people are consistently underestimating the AI."
"So to be in a situation where you don't underestimate it again, when it comes to safety and alignment, you have to have a very, very, very high bar."
"You could even go as far as to say, "Well, we should air gap the computers." And I'm not convinced that that would be sufficient."
"There are studies, and this is mostly academic, where you can have two computers next to each other that are air-gapped and they're still able to communicate with each other because they have temperature sensors."
"One of them is able to run their CPU really hot, and then the other one can actually detect the temperature change, and then that actually gives them a mechanism to communicate."

@anpaure@halvarflake I agree. This discourse is making me feel somewhat insane. Its like everyone else is saying "uhh, you really think someone is going to be able to get through this LOCKED DOOR? the deadbolt is PHYSICALLY BLOCKING the DOOR from OPENING"
@tszzl@llallawg The anti-noams are just having a hard time coming to grips understanding their physical environment is full of signals and the only limitation is the listener.
@Kafkaesquire Yes, you're missing LED lights (information in AND out is possible) and electromagnetic noise to name two.
There's so many ways that signals ambient signals can be manipulated https://t.co/jIC14SNIsQ
To underestimate LLMs in this context is a failure of the imagination.
@christitustech@midnucas The 0-40 cm is between PC cases, not CPU dies. BitWhisper demonstrated this in 2015 with ordinary desktops and fans.
Underestimating how frontier LLM can attack any given problem is mostly a failure of the imagination.
