Postdoc @G_Hydrodynamics @UTokyo_IIS.
PhD @vmishraiit @iitgn on groundwater depletion in India.
Interested in human impact on water resources systems modeling.
Using observations, crop switching optimization, and hydrological modeling, we quantify potential groundwater savings by crop redistribution and rice replacement with alternate crops under observed and warming climate to ensure food and freshwater security in India!

Monsoon 2025
Monsoon has come one week early this year, exciting season to follow. Early onset & covering a large area on the first day is not uncommon. In 1971, monsoon at the time of onset covered a larger area in Karnataka & parts of Maha.
Present active monsoon conditions to continue at least till 02 Jun, will help to advance monsoon into Maha & eastern parts. Subsequently monsoon to slow down and suggest a longer hiatus in progress.
In recent years, we see longer hiatus days mainly due to mid-latitude dry air intrusions. Farmers should be advised suitably.
These are early indications from the models. Uncertainties remain.

Groundwater in north India is over-exploited and climate change is worsening the problem. A modeling study explores conserving groundwater by redistributing crops and shifting some fields from rice to cereals, pulses, or oilseeds. In PNAS Nexus: https://t.co/HwGSoCDFFp

We are pleased to share our recent study on: Summer Monsoon Drying Accelerates India's Groundwater Depletion Under Climate Change that has appeared in Earth’s Future (@theAGU)! We show that climate warming combined with weaker summer monsoon can accelerate groundwater depletion!

Welcome Dr. Swarup Dangar (@swarup169) to UTokyo Global Hydrodynamics Lab! Let's do exciting work!
We also host Mr Minh Tam Nguyen as short-term visiting student from KAIST.
Congratulations Swarup Dangar for successfully defending his PhD thesis on: Influence of irrigation on depletion and recovery of groundwater in India. He will be joining @BigAsMountain as a postdoc from January 2024.
Congratulations, Dr Swarup Dangar!
My article in Hindu today on recent extreme rainfall over South TN & its prediction.
The TN event was one in hundred year event & the models have difficulties in predicting these outliers quantitatively. probabilistic approach can be used for better effective mitigation.
Groundwater future in India will depend on changes in the summer monsoon rainfall and pumping! Our recent study showed that projected increase in rainfall will help in groundwater recovery. https://t.co/XT67YJPxCx
@PokhrelYadu@NishanBhattara2@ScienceAdvances Congratulations! Our work based on the modeling shows that groundwater pumping from deeper aquifer will be the key factor and a lot will depend on the monsoon variability: https://t.co/XT67YJPxCx
