Assoc Director @GSK Vaccines. Former @Pfizer Vaccines, PD @PennMicro, PhD @miamiuniversity. Vinyl record junkie, slow runner. Opinions are my own. (he/his/him)
Excited to see this work out in preprint. Can’t thank Scott enough for the opportunity to be apart of this project. The Hensley lab and Penn Microbiology is a highly innovative and collaborative environment for any training. Can’t recommend enough to early career scientists.
I’m excited to see our paper posted @medrxivpreprint showing that older folks have higher levels of antibodies that recognize H5N1 viruses compared to younger individuals. Finally some good news for old people. 1/12 https://t.co/YZWLt98rgu

Here is analysis of HA mutations in H5 influenza case in Missouri resident without known contact w animals or raw milk.
TLDR: there is one HA mutation that strongly affects antigenicity, and another that merits some further study.
It's paper season in the Bjorkman Lab! Read more about the next-generation pan-sarbecovirus vaccine candidate developed in the Bjorkman lab in our latest publication in @CellCellPress

In new study led by @bdadonaite, we measure how all mutations to H5 influenza HA affect four molecular phenotypes relevant to pandemic risk:

Results can inform surveillance of ongoing evolution of H5N1.
The new Ground Truths is on a very concerning @NEJM prospective multicenter study today
2 big firsts:
1. Micro/nano plastics found in majority (58%) of patient carotid artery atherosclerotic plaques
2. Carried a 4.5 fold increased risk of major adverse outcomes

1. Canadian researchers publish the first estimates of 2023-24 #flu vaccine effectiveness that I've seen to date, in @Eurosurveillanc. The VE is pretty good — 61% overall against H1N1, which was responsible for the vast majority of cases. https://t.co/jnjA5TG70m
Important data with potentially big implications. Highlights the need for more research into the link between herpesviruses and neurological disorders.
Biggest thing to ever come out of my little group. Pls help spread this finding!
We found clean, CAUSAL evidence that the shingles vaccine prevents a good chunk of dementia cases. So, could a virus cause Alzheimer’s->YES!

Respiratory syncytial virus causes clinically significant illness in children and adults. In a placebo-controlled trial, a prefusion stabilized F protein vaccine led to an 83% lower risk of RSV infection. https://t.co/aU9BV0LXBU
Rethinking next-generation vaccines for #coronaviruses, #influenza viruses, & other respiratory viruses. Morens, Taubenberger, Fauci @NIAIDNews discuss approaches that need to be prioritized for development of vaccines against these viruses https://t.co/DQYnSAL0uz

Dr. Fauci was eligible for his COVID booster shot so Stephen took him next door to the pharmacy to get vaccinated — and they had quite the journey.
