I was in the car when this news came out but I’ve had some time to think about it now.

I think this proposal COMPLETELY exposes the owners as phonies. In fact, it’s not even that I think that. Logic makes it true.

When MLB initially proposed its cap/floor system to the players, their argument was that the top-tier FAs might make less but that more money would get distributed to lower tier FAs. The league actually tried to argue that the proposed system was better for the majority of players.

Then a few months later, they come out with a FA deadline system that would knee cap any leverage those 2nd, 3rd and lower tier FAs might have actually had.

The owners are asking for a salary cap to control salaries at the top end. And now they want to set an arbitrary deadline to force the lower tier guys to sign a contract regardless of whether that deal is satisfactory to them or not.

When everyone knows that the game of musical chairs stops on a certain day, players are going to feel pressured to sign before someone else takes their spot. That depresses salaries. And if that doesn’t work, owners can just wait out players until the deadline and gain leverage every day the deadline gets closer.

It’s an effort to control salaries at all tiers of free agency and it completely destroys any notion that the owners were trying to create a system that’s better for everyone as opposed to just being better for themselves.

MLB has proposed a new offseason calendar that features a 2-3-week free agency period.

Free agency would open on the Monday the Winter Meetings begin and close on December 21.

No signings or trades would be allowed before the window opens and through the first Monday of February after it ends.
