Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya ran one of Gaza's last hospitals. He refused to leave his patients even after Israel killed his own son in a drone strike.
Israel kidnapped him for it. 18 months in detention, tortured and beaten, for the crime of running a hospital.
He must be released.
Not in line with Israel’s values and norms?
That’s not true. Let´s stick to the facts.
While the hundreds of Global Sumud Flotilla activists unlawfully detained by Israel are en route back to their countries, Palestinian prisoners will have to continue to endure unspeakable abuse.
Israel has a long history of incarcerating Palestinians without charge or trial. Its systematic use of administrative detention – detaining Palestinians without charge or trial - is a cornerstone of Israel’s system of #apartheid. Torture and other ill-treatment of Palestinian prisoners have been a cruel reality for decades and only increased in the last 3 years. Over 9,000 Palestinian men, women, and children are currently held in Israel’s prisons. More than a 1,000 are from Gaza and subjected to enforced disappearance or held incommunicado in military facilities and denied access to lawyers or contact with their families.
Amnesty International and other human rights groups have continuously documented a pattern of Israeli authorities inflicting torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment against Palestinians, including through the denial of medicine, food, clothing and sleep, continuous beating, cuffing and blindfolding, dog attacks, rape and other sexual violence, among other abuses. In yet another display of double standards, third states have remained unmoved to the repeated calls to act to bring an end to Israel’s abuses against Palestinians in custody. This must end.
Yesterday, the Israeli Knesset passed with a whopping 93-0 majority, a new law authorizing use of the death penalty for individuals if convicted of involvement in the 7 Oct attacks, just a month after it adopted a discriminatory death penalty law in effect applying exclusively to Palestinians.
The new law mandates the creation of an ad hoc tribunal, effectively acting as a military court, with sweeping powers to deviate from standard procedural rules and evidentiary laws if “deemed necessary”. This is deeply alarming given that proceedings against alleged 7 Oct attackers are already marred by due process violations including prolonged detention without charge or trial, denial of access to lawyers and independent monitors and reports of widespread use of torture and other ill-treatment.
Those responsible for crimes under international law committed on 7 October must be held accountable through fair, independent and transparent trials in line with international law and standards - without resorting to the death penalty.
This law not only entrenches an inherently cruel and irreversible punishment, it erodes fundamental legal safeguards, blatantly breaches Israel’s international obligations and runs counter to the global trend towards the abolition of capital punishment the death penalty.
EU Foreign Ministers just gave the go-ahead to sanction Israeli settlers over violence against Palestinians.
They also agreed new sanctions on leading Hamas figures.
It was high time we move from deadlock to delivery.
Extremisms and violence carry consequences.
EU: Failure to suspend EU-Israel Association Agreement shows contempt for civilian lives

We are confronting the most challenging moment of our age. Humanity is under attack from transnational anti-rights movements and predatory governments determined to assert their dominance through unlawful wars and brazen economic blackmail.
What marks this moment as fundamentally different is that we’re no longer documenting erosion around the system’s edges. This is a direct assault on the foundations of human rights and the international rules-based order by the most powerful actors for the purpose of control, impunity and profit.
For the sake of humanity, the time to make history is now. #HumanityMustWin
🇪🇺🇮🇱 Is the EU finally ready to listen?

As @amnesty, we want to remind @vonderleyen & EU leaders that human rights is the foundation of the rules-based order.
Double standards and selective application of international law leave Europe more vulnerable, less credible and undermines its very raison d'être (1/2)
Older people in Gaza are facing a brutal, overlooked health crisis amid Israel’s ongoing genocide. A new joint investigation by @Amnesty and @HelpAge reveals how Israel’s continued blockade of aid and essential medicines is causing a devastating collapse in older people’s physical and mental health.
Forced to skip meals so younger family members can eat, ration life‑saving medications, and survive repeated displacement, older people describe conditions that are inhumane and life‑threatening. Israel’s restrictions are deliberately depriving Palestinians of the essentials needed to survive.
Amnesty and HelpAge call on Israel to immediately lift its blockade and allow unrestricted humanitarian access. The rights and needs of older people must no longer be ignored

Israel’s demolition of UNRWA’s buildings in illegally occupied East Jerusalem yesterday, boastfully overseen by the National Security Minister, is yet another example of the Israeli authorities’ full-fledged assault on international law, the UN & humanitarian work.
At a time when Israel continues to flagrantly violates its obligations towards Palestine refugees, UNRWA has long served as a lifeline, offering indispensable humanitarian aid, education, employment and shelter.
States must end their acquiescence by unconditionally supporting UNRWA and pressuring Israel to comply with the International Court of Justice’s October 2025 advisory opinion.
Israel must facilitate humanitarian aid, immediately revoke its anti-UNRWA legislations, and lift its cruel & arbitrary restrictions on humanitarian organizations.
3/ Amnesty International has now published an in-depth investigation documenting how Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups committed war crimes and crimes against humanity during their assault on southern Israel, and against hostages held in Gaza thereafter.
Today in the early morning, Israeli police accompanied by municipal officials forcibly entered the @UNRWA compound in East Jerusalem. Police motorcycles, as well as trucks & forklifts, were brought in & all communications were cut. Furniture, IT equipment & other property was seized. The @UN flag was pulled down & replaced with an Israeli flag.
This latest action represents a blatant disregard of Israel’s obligation as a United Nations Member State to protect & respect the inviolability of UN premises.
Following months of harassment that included arson attacks in 2024, hateful demonstrations & intimidation, supported by a large-scale disinformation campaign, as well as anti-UNRWA legislation passed by the Israeli parliament in breach of its international obligations, UNRWA personnel were forced to vacate the compound at the beginning of this year.
However, whatever action taken domestically, the compound retains its status as a UN premises, immune from any form of interference.
Israel is party to the Convention on the Privileges & Immunities of the UN. The Convention makes UN premises inviolable - in other words, immune from search and/or seizure - and makes UN property and assets immune from legal process.
The International Court of Justice has also underscored that Israel is obliged to cooperate with UNRWA & other UN agencies.
There can be no exceptions. To allow this represents a new challenge to international law, one that creates a dangerous precedent anywhere else the UN is present across the world.
🚨 Today’s decision by an Israeli court to extend Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya’s arbitrary detention for another six months without charges or trial is yet another outrageous injustice. Dr. Hussam should have never been detained in the first place, let alone subjected to this ordeal of torture and abuse. We, at Amnesty International, refuse to be silent and will continue to demand his immediate and unconditional release and that of all other Palestinians arbitrarily detained by Israel.

The release of the last 20 living hostages from the Gaza Strip and 1,966 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel ends their harrowing ordeals in detention and captivity and brings long-awaited relief for them and their families.
But it will not undo the immense suffering they have endured.
The joyful scenes of those released reunited with their loved ones must now be followed by a full cessation of hostilities in Gaza & a total lifting of Israel’s unlawful blockade.
Israel is responsible for ensuring the survival of Palestinians in Gaza & must allow unhindered humanitarian access.
After two years of shameful double standards and vetoes that strangled the UNSC as a livestreamed genocide in #Gaza is broadcast to the world, it is time to end this horror, mend what can be mended & salvage what is left of our shared humanity.
