Australian Professor Richard Scolyer of University of Sydney and his colleague professor Georgina Long have been researching melanoma for years. So when Scolyer was diagnosed with a glioblastoma tumor in June last year, he decided to undergo their own treatment.
Their treatment uses a pre-surgery combination immunotherapy that activates the patient’s immune system, which makes the melanoma curable. It is credited for saving thousands of people but it was never done on someone with brain cancer.
Scolyer became the first brain cancer patient to use this treatment, and it worked. His latest MRI showed no signs of cancer.
"I can run and do the things I love doing and spending time with my wonderful family and enjoying life as best I can, given the circumstances," he commented.
Scolyer and Long were named Australian of the Year 2024 for their groundbreaking melanoma research.
