Did you know that Christian villages in Plateau state in central Nigeria are reeling from a series of Christmas weekend attacks carried out by Muslims that left nearly 200 Christians dead?

Nigeria is the most dangerous country in the world to live in if you are Christian. Shockingly, the U.S. government left it out of its 2024 religious freedom watchlist for the third consecutive year.

But the state of Christian and Muslim relations is not all doom and gloom. There are glimmers of hope.

For example, meet Imam Abdullahi Abubakar (pictured middle). He risked his life and saved over 300 Christians back in June 2018 by sheltering them in his home/mosque from an oncoming attack by a Muslim militia.

For his efforts, the U.S. State Department conferred him with the 2019 U.S. International Religious Freedom Award.

Imam Abdullahi is a hero among us. I was lucky enough to spend time with him back in 2019 at the Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

He was incredibly humble. I remember him telling me through his translator, “I was just trying to please God by protecting his creation.” He had a light and aura about him that made for a divine exchange. I will never forget it.

“And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely” (Qur’an 5-32)

“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (John 15-13).
