How to clear UPSC Civil Services Exam in 2026:
To start, you must understand two aspects to structure this exam in your head:
1. Bird’s Eye View - the larger picture
2. The Micro View - the detailed sub-components of the bird’s eye view, then you have a good chance to beat 80% of other aspirants!
So, let’s look at the Bird’s Eye View first:
1. Paper has three components - prelims, mains and interview.
Prelims is ONLY qualifying, marks don’t count in overall rank.
— So essentially, prelims is a process of elimination for UPSC.
UPSC just wants the best 15000 aspirants competing seriously in the next gruelling stage that actually matters.
Prelims has 2 parts - General Studies and Aptitude test (CSAT).
Like the names suggest, GS is a test of overall awareness about anything under the sun (not skill-based, but more of knowledge based and inference based test).
Aptitude test is more about your skills in reasoning, logic etc.
This is qualifying in nature again, and you need only 33% marks to simply qualify this paper. Its marks won’t matter in your name for the Mains.
It is the GS exam whose marks matter. So here you have to get as much as possible in order to make to the next stage.
So, the gist of the story is, it is GS what matters and you need to work hard on it, Aptitude test (CSAT) can be done with devoting max 10-15% of your time & effort if you are an engineering student and 20-30% time if you are a non-science/engineering student.
Therefore, key is to start your overall UPSC preparation with GS subjects and that too with these 4 most important ones:
1. Economics 2. Ecology and Environment 3. Polity
4. Geography
These subjects overall contribute to 60-70% of overall what UPSC asks in prelims as well as mains (on a foundational level at least)
Now, what about Mains. it is a completely different story.
Mains has 4 subjects GS1,2,3,4 which are basically covering areas such ass general developmental economics, policy, general socio, geography, history both Indian and world, international relations, political science, defence, internal security, and ethics.
VAST.
However, remember, it basically covers all Prelims topics also. Only delivery is different. Prelims is an objective, multiple-choice based test. Mains is a subjective, writing based test.
Then, Mains has 1 optional paper. Here you select a choice of Undergrad level subject of your choice from those provided by UPSC.
Optional is a gruelling test. Here, UPSC tests your ability to go deep. So you have to deliver high quality analysis of undergrad level in these papers. Not easy, but with the right work, possible.
Then comes, Essay test. You have to write two essays of 1500-2000 words each on topics of your choice from those provided by UPSC. Again, a test of critical thinking and presentation of those thoughts in a prose. Needs a ton of practice to excel.
If you make thru, comes the Interview stage, which account for approx 15% of your total marks. So, if you are top 50 in written Mains, top 100 is almost guaranteed. Therefore, always focus on MAINS first, then rest follows.
Now, this is an overall view of the field. More like a basic understanding of what you should be focusing on and what not.
So, let’s summarise:
WHEN TO START:
— ASAP! It takes approx. full 1 year to prepare for this exam. However, if you start early in college, it helps. I would restrict my attempts to 3 max.
WHERE TO START:
— Start with either Econ, Environment, geography or polity. Finish it in max 2 months and move to the next subject. Max 2 subjects simultaneously. Otherwise stick to 1. Choose optional within first 2-3 months of prep.
HOW TO MANAGE TIME:
— Strict 4-4-3 hour sessions everyday. 7 am - 12 am, 1 pm - 5 pm, 7 pm - 10 pm.
— sounds tough, but well, it takes a lot!
I will go more deep next time. The next post will be the Micro View. I will deep dive into each aspect of the exam!
Happy new year 2026!

Investing years of life, only to be stumped by a faulty answer key. The discrepancy between tentative and final keys is a bitter pill to swallow for thousands of TNPSC aspirants. With 7 questions already sent to the expert committee for the 2025 Group 1 prelims, it's clear the problem is far from solved @TNPSC_Office must nip this in the bud and ensure a transparent and accurate process. Have uploaded Final Keys for past 2 Group 1 Prelims Final Keys -indicate that 15–20 questions, roughly 10% of the total, often differ between tentative and final keys
