Today was the first major anti-trans hearing in the House of Representatives on gender affirming care.
In it, Republicans relied heavily on misinformation around care.
I correct five of the biggest myths in the hearing.

About an hour after Ron DeSantis signed a bill stripping state minimum wage protections from minor league baseball players, the state House member who sponsored the legislation texted a baseball emoji to a lobbyist for Major League Baseball:
Today the US House is holding a hearing on the “Dangers of Due Process Violatipms of Gender Affirming Care” with the intention of banning trans care nationwide. Erin Reed is working at the Capitol today, so I’ll be covering live starting now.
For doing their job, reporters @brittny_mejia & @liborjany were berated by LAPD & police union officials.
The outrage exposed an alarming ignorance of a free press among top police officials in one of the nation’s largest cities, experts say

What fantastic news to start the day! Bedaquiline will be available in so many places it is needed! Thank you @JNJNews for prioritizing #PatientsNotPatents and allowing so many lives to be saved!
In just 22 hours, 578,000 people have watched this video about Johnson & Johnson's pursuit of secondary patents for bedaquiline and how this will lead to millions being unable to receive curative treatment for tuberculosis. https://t.co/Zy86nQE7lD #PatientsNotPatents@JNJNews
I want to be very clear that no one is SUGGESTING that people will die because Johnson & Johnson is trying to immorally extend their patent on bedaquline an additional 4 years after its 20-year term.
Instead, people are STATING THE FACT that people will die because of Johnson & Johnson trying to immorally extend their patent on bedaquiline an additional 4 years after its 20-year term.
Like many intentionally confusing corporate crisis response messages, this says a bunch of things that are true but don’t mean what you think, like for example:
“On April 5, during a World Health Organization meeting, the GDF shared its intent to launch a tender for generic versions of SIRTURO® 100mg in the third quarter of 2023”
This sounds like it says “everybody can have generic bedaquiline!!” But actually they *had to allow* the production of a generic because some countries had the power and systems in place to reject their attempt to extend their patent. The generic will not be available in countries where the patent extension wasn’t rejected, just like John said in his video.
Unless that’s not the case @JNJNews!!
If you’re telling us that you will allow the sale of generics anywhere in the developing world then we will happily send thank you baskets to your entire c-suite! Please let us know! Maybe we got it wrong and you only did the arduous work of extending the patent in a bunch of developing countries for funsies!
So spend 5 minutes watching this video.

This isn't a little thing...stats that big can seem impossible to imagine, but the good that could be done here is enormous. And it won't cost you a penny.
