वीडियो में स्पष्ट रूप से दिखाई दे रहा है कि टक्कर जानबूझकर मारी गई है, इसलिए इसे केवल सड़क दुर्घटना मानकर कार्रवाई न की जाए, बल्कि जानबूझकर हत्या करने के प्रयास सहित लागू होने वाली सभी संगीन धाराओं में मामला दर्ज कर आरोपी की तत्काल गिरफ्तारी की जाए।

On the night of 2nd June 2023, 3 trains collided beside a small village in Odisha. 296 people died and more than 1,200 were injured.

The official rescue teams reached the site about 30 minutes later.

For that half hour, the people pulling passengers out of the wreckage were villagers using the torches on their mobile phones.

One of them was 17 years old. His name is Subhransu Panda.

He is from Bahanaga, a small block town in Balasore district. The Coromandel Express entered the wrong line at full speed and hit a stationary goods train. Coaches were thrown across the adjacent track and a second passenger train ran into them.

It happened metres from people's houses.

Villagers from Bahanaga and from the surrounding hamlets, Kamaripur, Ichhapur, Daradia and Krushnapur, ran to the tracks. Hundreds of them. Men, women, teenagers.

It was dark. There was no lighting at the site. They climbed into the coaches holding up their phones and worked by that light.

Subhransu has described how it was organised, without anyone organising it. The older boys and young men did the lifting and the pulling. The younger children ran to the tube wells and carried buckets of water, because the bottled water in the market had run out within minutes.

Injured passengers were taken away on motorcycles and auto rickshaws because there were no ambulances yet. Someone dialled 108. Within about half an hour, 3 ambulances arrived and started carrying people to Soro, a bigger town 10 to 12 km away.

The village high school was turned into a temporary morgue.

Among the first people to reach the wreckage were Ranajit Giri, Biprada Bag, Asha Behera and Ashok Bera. All of them lived beside that track.

Days later, journalists who went back found the villagers still unable to sleep. They talked about the smell that would not leave the air, and about the sounds they had heard from inside the coaches before they could get to them.

Odisha has a scheme that trains villagers as first responders for cyclones and earthquakes. It is called Aapada Mitra.

Reporters found that most people in Bahanaga had never heard of it and could not say who in the village had been trained.

They did it anyway, in the dark, with the torches on their phones.

My theory for why everyone feels like time after 2020 is moving much faster is this:

We spend a lot more time in front of our screens, and screens really warp our sense of time passing by.

The proof is there - if we take that one hour we spend watching videos and spend it outdoors doing some activity or talking to people, the same one hour feels like a much longer time.

I genuinely want to understand who is responsible here.

The department whose job is to give us decent and safe roads?

The authority that issues driving licences and ensures people driving these huge tankers are actually fit to drive them?

The authority that allows these tankers to run on our roads and is supposed to ensure that the vehicle, registration and number plate are all compliant?

This is around Varthur CDP Road. Just see the condition of the road and the way these tankers move around people on two-wheelers.

At the end of all this, it is the common man who suffers.

We pay income tax, GST, road tax, registration charges and so much more. Asking for a decent road and basic safety is surely not asking for too much.

Do we really need to wait for someone to lose their life before action is taken?
