Today is World Liver Day 2026.
Here are 8 things your liver actually wants you to know.
1
There is no such thing as a "liver detox."
Your liver runs phase I and II detoxification 24/7 on its own.
No juice cleanse, no milk thistle, no herbal detox speeds this up.
In fact several have caused liver injury - the opposite of the claim.
2
Alcohol has no safe dose.
Liver harm begins from the first drink.
The old "moderate drinking is protective" myth came from flawed studies contaminated by abstainer bias - now debunked by Mendelian randomization.
Zero ml is best.
3
"Natural" supplements are now a leading cause of acute liver failure.
Ashwagandha. Green tea extract. Garcinia. Kratom. High-dose turmeric. Giloy/Tinospora.
They dominate drug-induced liver injury registries across India, the US, and Europe.
Natural ≠ safe.
4
Coffee is genuinely liver-protective.
2–3 cups/day (caffeinated or decaf) lowers the risk of fibrosis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer.
One of the very few dietary interventions with real, replicated evidence.
5
Fatty liver (MASLD) now affects ~1 in 3 adults worldwide.
A 7–10% body-weight loss:
• clears Liver fat
• reduces inflammation
• can regress early fibrosis
No approved drug currently beats this. Your plate and feet are the first-line therapy.
6
Sugar-sweetened drinks independently cause fatty liver.
Fructose is metabolized almost entirely by the liver - straight into fat.
One daily soda raises MASLD risk even after adjusting for total calories.
Lesser is better.
7
Get vaccinated against hepatitis B. Get screened for HBV and HCV at least once in your lifetime.
HBV vaccine prevents >95% of chronic infection, cirrhosis, and liver cancer.
Hepatitis C is curable in 8-12 weeks with >95% success - but most carriers don't know they have it.
8
Exercise protects the liver independent of weight loss.
150 min/week moderate OR 75 min vigorous activity reduces liver fat and stiffness - even when the scale doesn't move.
Movement is "medicine".

Anger directed at @EliLillyandCo alone?
Shouldn't we be targeting clinics that indulge in these unethical practices?
Who is prescribing? Endocrinologist, internist (as directed by the @MoHFW_INDIA?)
If not, how are the pharmacies providing it?
It can't be so difficult to track..
Good morning Mohanji. I presume you are either a Homeopath or Ayurveda practitioner and hence the insecurity. Which is why you are asking to shoot the messenger, instead of acting on the message.
Whether traditional (classical), unlabelled or proprietary, Ayurveda products are harmful unless proven otherwise. And because they have no conclusive benefits other than "advertised" benefits or "personal experiences", any adverse event, is highly significant, because it is an avoidable health harm.
This is from our paper: "Paradoxically, classical regulated Ayurvedic formulations demonstrated the highest contamination rate (34.1%) compared to unlabelled products (23.1%), suggesting that regulatory classification does not ensure pharmaceutical purity." : https://t.co/3RIqoZevob
CBI has not investigated me. But Ayurveda Drugs Controller from the State Ayush Department has, and has seen all the original data/work we have done. Because of complaints and harassments raised against me by the private Ayurveda Drugs Manufacturers lobby. You can read about it here: https://t.co/gCrI6oBNZW
Additionally, I was also investigated (again harassed after complaints from private Ayurveda Drugs Manufacturers lobby) by the Deputy Superintendent of Police regarding our published peer-reviewed scientific works on Ayush medicines causing liver injury. You can read about that also here: https://t.co/7UaKXVuHhW
I was even visited by the Uttar Pradesh Police to check on data and reports we published on Homeopathic formulations that had harmed patients: https://t.co/7xkhvQ9Igg
This is how scientific debates are conducted by third-rate "healthcare" practitioners such as yourself and alternative medicine practitioners and industry with a public health activist doctor presenting objective evidence of harms on their products. They sent police, lawyers or regulatory authorities to investigate, harass, intimidate and physically and mentally exhaust me and my team.
Also, do read this: https://t.co/8mv8XFdNIj
So if you think your dogwhistling to authorities, anonymously sitting behind a computer in your reitrement age, in your basement, after living out a whole life of fraud on your patients is going to be effective, then its delusional, just like your delusions on alternative medicines benefiting humans.
Instead of doubling down on public health damaging practices, for once, be useful in your life and let younger generations know, that Ayush-based career is not a real career at all. Making a living out of deceiving patients on products and practices is not nice.
Beware, the "gut health" experts. Most of them have no expertise in the microbiome and have poorly read superficial knowledge which they use to misinform the public and patients.

Beyond Sex hormone - Testosterone is messenger of metabolism.
It affects metabolism by acting on multiple organs - liver, muscle, fat, bone, immune cells, pancreas and heart. A great review in @NatMetabolism
