Never Forget Tiananmen Square Massacre!
Today marks the anniversary of China’s Tiananmen Square Uprising, and I was pleased to attend the annual commemoration in Toronto alongside Chinese community leaders, survivors of the 1989 democracy movement, and former student leaders who witnessed and survived the Tiananmen massacre.
As a former Iranian leading student activist, it was a deeply emotional experience to stand with them and honor their courage and sacrifice.
The Tiananmen Square movement has always been a source of inspiration for me. As a student activist in Iran, I closely followed their struggle for freedom, democracy, and human rights.
Exactly ten years after Tiananmen, in July 1999, a similar student-led uprising took place in Iran. I was honored to serve as one of its organizers and leaders. For my involvement, I was detained and tortured by the Islamic Republic’s intelligence services.
Standing today beside Tiananmen student leaders who survived those tragic events was both moving and meaningful. Together, we laid flowers in memory of those who lost their lives in Tiananmen Square and paid tribute to all who have sacrificed for freedom, justice, and human dignity.
Though separated by borders and cultures, the struggles of students in China and Iran are connected by a shared aspiration: freedom, democracy, and the right of people to determine their own future.
