@Brady_H Agree with the sentiment but we need a more effective system of coaching education. All the level 1 certs right now are nowhere near sufficient to prepare someone to actually coach. I fear they create a perception of qualification way beyond what they actually provide.
@SteAssent Practically the 4hr effort is harder in the sense that the athletes has to go deeper into the unknown and will like come out of the race more beat up, but the 3hr effort is run at a relatively harder effort physiologically
@SteAssent It’s a failure to understand the relationship between relative effort and duration. Max 3hr effort is a higher % of max effort than max 4hr effort. Despite both athletes covering 26.2 physiologically these are different events. Both efforts very hard.
@dummyaccount209@SteAssent That requires the faulty assumption that they are the same exertion rates, which is not true. Max 4hr pace is going to be a slightly lower % of max effort than max 3hr pace. While both athletes cover a marathon physiologically these are different events.
@Hybridathlete You gotta be a world champion to explain the concept of using common sense on an easy run 😅
All seriousness, running fast informs expertise mostly by giving easy access to many smart and fast people to learn from, but it’s not the only way nor guarantees expertise by itself!
@DavidDack The coach in me doesn’t like applying these heavily loaded terms to arbitrary population level stratification. Like you said it puts weird ideas in runners heads and isn’t productive for each athletes very individual journey.
@DavidDack Based on the dictionary definitions of elite, to me it makes the most sense to apply it in sport as a standard of the top competitive group -so for the 10k that’s hitting world champs/Olympics qualifiers.
@hubermanlab@Brady_H@Michael_Easter What’s informing your assertion here? Most of the common peptides are banned by WADA because they have no officially approved therapeutic use.
Most of the guys in Brady’s competitive bracket are not taking these.
@brady_h A way I’ve started explaining easy runs to people: you should be able to hold a conversation with someone on the phone, but they would be able to tell that you are exercising without you telling them.
@GuruAnaerobic Thriving vs just surviving. You’re challenging people to step up and actually thrive -big picture it’s way the more compassionate message.
@zachpogrob Unless someone is a minimalist/barefoot runner it doesn’t exist -properly cushioned sole will always be too built up for serious lifting and will look goofy at a nice dinner.
@stevemagness Need to convince the influencers that the ultimate longevity test is a mile TT instead -decent proxy for VO2 max but also captures aspects of peak power, speed, strength, efficiency, etc.
Plus it’s just way cooler.
@NDominator@feelthebyrn1 In the spirit of Gordo’s point I recommend to a lot of folks to have a time focused and less specific big day instead of 3hrs of pavement pounding -could be a long run/hike on the trails, long bike ride, big bike/run day, etc. Get the mental and nutrition practice with less risk.
