As someone who did this kind of genome mining work during my PhD, some thoughts on this Anthropic announcement:

First, the very simplified version of what they did is that they noticed two genes (one known, one new) sitting next to a weird repeating piece of DNA. More specifically, they described an unusual reverse transcriptase (RT) associated with a repetitive DNA array and an unknown accessory protein. This kind of process was used to understand CRISPR back in 2002 and was key to the gene editing tools we use today.

To put this into context, though, people have been finding RTs associated with CRISPR arrays since 2008, and this general kind of genome-neighborhood mining has been used to discover new biological systems for decades. The basic genome-mining strategy is well established, and there are now mature tools and published pipelines for doing much of this. There are papers that discover and experimentally validate dozens of new systems using this approach in a single study. Doing it in bacteriophage genomes is also nothing new (eg CasPhi).

Finding a weird cluster of genes and repeats is often the easy part. The hard part, and where the real discoveries come from, is figuring out what the system actually does. Eg for the bridge-RNA discovery in 2024 from @arcinstitute or the discovery of CasPhi in 2020 from @DoudnaJennifer they figured out the pieces of the system and the rules for what makes it work so it can be used.

Anthropic does not yet know what this does. They’ve shown that the repeat array produces RNAs, but not what those RNAs do, what the RT does with them, or whether the system has any of the programmable properties that make the CRISPR comparison justified.

I’m genuinely rooting for all of the frontier labs to seriously get into biological discovery, and I’m excited about what comes out of it. But announcing these very early, incremental findings with the framing of a major discovery doesn’t help. I’d much rather they set the bar high now, so that when an AI actually discovers a fundamentally new biological mechanism, everyone appreciates how big a deal it is.

An issue of student suicide was converted into a caste issue. Academic pressure-related deaths need to be discussed. But the parents' family has really done no favours for anyone. The caste kangers on all sides do not help with any of this.

The facts are now out
1. No complaint was made against him to IITB SC/ST cell or the police.
2. Multiple testimonies(attached) from students who have interacted with him(including some from SC/ST community) confirming his character.
3. No evidence or witnessed provided for the accusation
4. A multi-decade long career with no similar accusations been made(even after he was booked)

But the icing on the cake that convinces me that the probability the accusations are true is close to zero was the fact that the following allegation has been made:
- “Prof. Doolla hurled caste based abuses at the behest of the Director”

Anybody who has half a brain-cell and has seen any large institution functioning can tell- that couldn’t possibly be true.

IITB has 10000+ students from bachelors, masters, phd, a large chunk of whom are from SC/ST communities - the insinuation that the director of such a large institution would personally encourage the abuse of an individual second year undergrad student- is laughable at best.

Even if we believe this for a minute- among thousands of possible students, why would only a single student be singled out for this? Where is there an accusation from even a single other person of such systemic abuse?

And if you can’t present any, do you honestly believe that the director of such a huge institute would leave all his work aside and specifically target only a single student?

They should at least have made their lies more believable.

I am truly saddened by the incident and think we need to reflect on what we are doing wrong as a society that we’re having suicides at our premiere institutes every couple of months. I also can’t imagine what his friends and family are going through today and hope they get the strength to get past this.

But this sad incidence does not justify the unfair witch-hunt against Prof. Doolla and the torture him and his family are being subject to right now.

To the best of the knowledge about the series of events- All he did was do his job - and he is being punished for that.

Given the circumstances, the least he is owed is a presumption of innocence as the investigation occurs.

It’s a dark day when you start punishing your brightest minds simply for doing their job.

I hope collective sense is restored and we can all move past this.

I strongly oppose the charges against Prof. Suryanarayana Doolla of IIT Bombay under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

My background: I belong to the Devendra Kula Vellalar (DKV) community, classified as SC. I grew up in deep rural poverty and witnessed the suffering of my people first-hand. I was educated thanks to broad-minded people from many communities.

I studied Electronics at NIT Tiruchirappalli, worked at C-DOT Bengaluru, and then at Intel in India and the US, where I rose to Engineering Director and Senior Silicon Architect, responsible for high-speed interconnects vital to modern CPUs and GPUs. I hold multiple patents in this field.

I share this to make clear that I know what it means to come from an SC community and rise through hard work and commitment.

Our DKV community has taken a principled, voluntary stand not to file SC/ST cases against anyone. We have seen how cases under this Act are weaponised, and how that deepens enmity on the ground.

On that basis, I oppose the misuse of this Act in this case. The case against Prof. Doolla must be withdrawn. This matters for the future of SC/ST students and for our nation.
