I'm noticing the growing possibility that Europe becomes very poor in the course of the next 10-20 years. You have the following factors:
- Heavy industry totally uncompetitive against China, automakers etc. rapidly losing ground
- Services industry totally uncompetitive against AI
- No natural resources, or regulatory hurdles making their extraction impossible
- No access to the new economy (no AI, no data centers, uncompetitive energy sector)
- Client states caught in one-way welfare ratchets, spend reallocation + investment well-nigh impossible
This seems under-contemplated. And we're talking really, seriously dirt poor: taken to its logical conclusion, many countries will have much, much smaller services and manufacturing industries -- economies may become much more heavily skewed toward natural resources and energy markets, where Europe has made it impossible for itself to compete.
And I'm not saying that this is likely to happen, it's an extreme case. But the probability is greater than zero and appears to be growing. The EV of that is so negative that it's surprising to me that it's not coming up more.

Americans are flying to Shanghai for a lung cancer pill that the FDA approved 15 months ago.
Max Doppelt did it for his mother. Her lung cancer had spread to her brain. The drug most likely to help her, sunvozertinib, had been sold in China since 2023 but was unavailable in the US. So he flew over and came home with 26 boxes. Nineteen months later, she is alive and still working. He says at least 30 Americans have made the same trip.
In the trial behind the US approval, the pill shrank tumors in 46 out of every 100 patients whose cancer had worsened after chemotherapy.
The holdup is business, not medicine. Dizal, the Shanghai company that makes it, had no US sales network, according to US oncologists in May. AstraZeneca licensed the drug in July for $600 million and says US sales will start this quarter.
An @FDA approval helps American patients only when a company actually sells the drug here.
Nächster freier Termin: in neun Wochen.
Okay, dann eben Spontantermin.
Soweit so gut.
Ich will gerade aufstehen.
„Ach, Moment.
An meine neue Adresse in Prag. Hier sind die natürlich ganz schnell.
Das ist das beste Deutschland aller Zeiten.

🚨BREAKING: New York Police Officer Quathisha Epps made over 400,000 dollars last year with a base salary of 204,000 and another 204,000 in overtime.
She claimed to have worked over 1,600 hours of overtime and is now under internal affairs investigation for allegedly falsifying overtime hours, including self-approving her own time slips.
Despite the probe, she was allowed to retire early and is now receiving roughly 16,000 dollars per month from taxpayers in her pension.

DEPORT!
In January 2025 my mom’s lung cancer spread to her brain. The drug with the best chance of helping her was approved in China but not here.
A doctor told me, almost as an aside, that if she were Chinese she could buy it at a pharmacy.
So I flew to Shanghai and came home with 26 boxes in my luggage. That was 19 months ago. My mom is still here, still working, and in her words has had an amazing three years.
The drug was approved in China in 2023. The FDA approved it in July 2025. It still is not for sale here. I know of at least 30 Americans who have made the same trip.
I have been scared to tell this story because I worried it could cost my mom access to the medicine keeping her alive. But the problem matters more than my silence. These drugs need to be developed and available here, and that means FDA reform.
Art Allen at KFF Health News told our story this week. It also ran in The Washington Post.

Before: tankers filled Iran’s main oil-loading terminal.
After: no crude tankers in sight.
Kharg Island is now nothing more than a monument to the one thing the Iranian regime can still produce: failure.
The regime’s arrogance and belligerence continue to punish ordinary Iranians. Operation Economic Outcast is cutting off the regime’s oil lifeline, denying it resources to fund terrorism, nuclear procurement, and the lavish lifestyles of the IRGC elite.
