The attached video is the insightful Afaan Oromo discussion with Professor Asafa Jalata, Dr. Tsegaye Ararsa, and Eng. Jamal Genamo—my comments draw heavily from it, offering deeper context on Oromo views of Ethiopian history, the shift from "Abyssinia" to "Ethiopia," and related issues.

Many Oromo scholars argue that the international preference for "Ethiopia" over "Abyssinia" was shaped by British advocates, with some (like Dr. Rundasa Eshete) attributing influence to Sylvia Pankhurst's prominent pro-Ethiopia activism. I hope to explore this further with him.

Historically, King Ezana of Aksum used titles including "King of the Ethiopians" (alongside Sabeans and others) in inscriptions around 350 AD, after campaigns into Nubia. For centuries, outsiders—especially Arabs and Europeans—called the region Abyssinia. Ethiopia joined the League of Nations as Abyssinia on September 28, 1923. The United States officially switched to "Ethiopia" on February 3, 1926, and the country used "Ethiopia" upon joining the United Nations in 1945.

Today, after generations of oppression, exploitation, marginalization, and violence in the name of Ethiopia, deep resentment toward the name has grown among core nations that formed the modern empire—especially many Amhara, nearly all Tigrayans (Tegaru), and the colonized Oromo (roughly half or more of Ethiopia's population). Amhara struggles now center on "Amhara" identity, Tigrayans on "Tigray," while communities like the Mursi in the Omo Valley often feel little connection to "Ethiopia" at all.

The regime long promoted a mythology of 3,000 years of unbroken independence and Solomonic continuity, often appropriating ancient Kushite elements. This generation, however, is well-read and increasingly rejects such narratives.

The Oromo people—facing defamation, marginalization, extrajudicial killings, mass arrests, and systemic exploitation—remain resolute in their pursuit of self-determination, a cause for which they have sacrificed their best and brightest for over a century.

Without swift reversal of these injustices, the current path may unite oppressed peoples against the ruling elite, leading to dramatic change sooner than many expect.

The regime enjoyed global admiration in 2018 but has since become widely reviled after the deaths of perhaps millions in Tigray and countless losses in Oromia and beyond.

Years ago, U.S. Senator Coons reminded the Senate: "The OLA of today is the Oromo Qeerroo of yesterday who ousted the EPRDF using peaceful means." Now, the OLA actively fights the central government across Oromia zones, driven by grief over lost loved ones and guilt-by-association killings. Combined with tensions elsewhere, this could precipitate the implosion of the empire-state structure.

My heart goes out to all peoples in the Ethiopian empire, tragically divided by ruling elites under PM Abiy.

I never imagined seeing the name "Ethiopia" hated so intensely. There is a real possibility this imposed name could be erased sooner rather than later.

Ethiopia Could Become the Epicenter of a Larger Conflict

While Ethiopia attempts to remain uninvolved in the Sudanese conflict, it has been arming itself and repeatedly asserting that access to the sea is an existential issue for the country. Ethiopian officials have stated that "3 million Eritreans cannot decide the fate of nearly 200 million Ethiopians."

In recent months, tensions in the region have risen sharply, with separatist threats emerging inside Ethiopia and Eritrea providing direct support to the Sudanese government in its civil war.

The reality is that Ethiopia has been significantly strengthening its air force. It currently operates many less capable aircrafts, but also 20 Su-27s and few Su-30s, and in the last month it has reportedly ordered 6 Su-35s.

Eritrea today lacks the capacity to face a unified Ethiopia with a strong air force. However, Egypt has entered the equation by conducting military exercises and deepening cooperation with Eritrea and Somalia, two countries that are openly hostile to Ethiopia. Even with Egyptian support - without direct involvement- these two countries can’t beat an unified Ethiopia.

But under this hot temperature, If Ethiopia were to launch an offensive against Eritrea, this might encourage already restive and armed regions within Ethiopia to seek independence, potentially repeating the Sudanese civil war into a broader catastrophe across the Horn of Africa.
