@CiaraGlenville Right? There is a movement to help people with skillful, ethical placebo interventions. This work is not very visible, but it’s global and driven by good intentions and scientific rigor.
@TheSGEM@Charlene_Mattie@DrNeilStone I once pitched Zeebo Placebo + self-tracking app in Silicon Valley in front of investors against the Oura Ring and a mobile TENS device. Bayer bought the TENS startup. I still have Zeebo - it was a little too honest for industry, then. They called me a heretic, but they liked it.
@TheSGEM@Charlene_Mattie@DrNeilStone The placebo effect is justification enough for the use of acupuncture. Show me another intervention with the same beneficial results and safety profile. Well, maybe a Zeebo placebo pill. Oh, there are published, clinical studies using Zeebo an honest placebo in Journal for Pain.
Incredibly appreciative of @KarlDeisseroth pioneering vision & honored to work alongside the amazing Human Neural Circuitry (HNC) team. Excited to share our first HNC paper @ScienceMagazine illuminating conserved brain-wide emergence of emotional response from sensory experience
🤯TRIPPING IN YOUR SLEEP: Psychedelics, The Placebo Effect, & How Human Connection Heals the Brain with Dr. Boris Heifets @TheBorisLab 💭 Ep. 51 @AChatWithUma out now! 🌟

Placebo effect was most powerful/positive tool for most of medical history & is still big part of good medical & psychiatric outcomes.
This grest piece explains how giving symptoms fancy sounding diagnostic names has magical healing powers of reassurance/hope/group membership.
@AllenFrancesMD Thanks for bringing up the placebo effect for skillful use. I created Zeebo pills back in 2014 to give people a safe, honest placebo to use. There has been a lot of pushback by the establishment, but we heard many positive stories from people. We can use some support.
@KnightlineLegal@ChamberofFit Interesting topic. Surgery response rates are in the placebo realm. At one point we enrolled 140,000 patients in prospective, observational studies for chronic pain treatment. Elective spine surgery did not look great in terms of response rates. That’s what got me into placebos.
@DrNeilStone Yes! Talk about the skillful use of honest placebo to reduce opioid dependency after surgery, lower drug use for chronic pain, facilitating weaning off drugs, more systematic placebo comparing approaches to taking supplements to provide insight into what works for one person N=1
@5HT2andJames@hubermanlab@RCarhartHarris@sweatystartup@Drug_Researcher It’s the meaning and prior exposure. The participants in the study had experience with the active substance. My hunch is the placebo-taking help them tap into the same state of mind, the configuration is stored and can be remembered as an active state, not just as a memory about
@DrNeilStone If you take an honest placebo and that helps you
- that’s even better
No active ingredients, no active side effects.
If you not sure you need a supplement, try an honest placebo first.
