BNPâs Political Activities Now Reflect the Hallmarks of Fascism

A body was recovered four days after the victim went missing. Was this an enforced disappearance followed by a killing allegedly carried out by BNP-affiliated terrorists?
On June 22, Suman, a member of the Bangladesh Chhatra League from Ward 53 of Turag Police Station, went missing after participating in a rally organized to mark the founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Awami League in the Dhaka-18 constituency. Four days later, Ashulia Police recovered his body from the Turag River.
Among the seven people who reportedly disappeared following the attack on that rally, the bodies of Chhatra League activist Suman, Ariful, and Jubo League leader Biplob have since been recovered from the Turag River. The whereabouts of the remaining four individuals are still unknown.
The text alleges that these were planned enforced disappearances followed by killings carried out by BNP terrorists. It further argues that allegations of political violence, suppression of dissent, and attacks on political opponents call the countryâs democratic environment into question, and claims that the BNP has now embraced a politics of enforced disappearances and murder.
According to the text, the BNPâs politics now stand on bloodshed, enforced disappearances, territorial domination, and dead bodies.
The people of Bengal, it concludes, will one day demand accountability for this bloodshedâŠ

Hadiâs supporters held a sit-in at Shahbagh on Friday (19 December) demanding justice for the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi. The program later turned into a gathering dominated by jihadist and radical Islamist elements, with leaders such as Jasimuddin Rahmani and Ataur Rahman Bikrampuri of Towhidi Janata in attendance. Members of other extremist groups were also present and delivered provocative speeches.
Jasimuddin Rahmani, a jihadist and head of the Al-Qaedaâlinked Ansarullah Bangla Team, was previously detained under Bangladeshâs Anti-Terrorism Act during the Awami League government for supporting the killings of atheist bloggers murdered between 2013 and 2016. He has since been released under the current Yunus-led administration and has publicly reiterated and justified his support for those killings.
â16 December 1971â Vs. â5 August 2024â
In Bangladeshâs political landscape, the Awami League and Jamaat-e-Islami represent two completely opposing forces. In much the same way, 16 December 1971 and 5 August 2024 stand at opposite ends of history.
16 December is observed as Victory Dayâthe triumph of Bangladesh and, simultaneously, the defeat of Jamaat-e-Islami. Jamaat cannot commemorate this day in the manner the Awami League does, nor will it ever be able to. The reason is historical: the ideological predecessors of Jamaat-e-Islami surrendered to the freedom fighters and the allied forces on this very day. The inheritors of the Razakar legacy have never been able to erase the shame of that surrender.
By contrast, the Awami League will never perceive 5 August the way Jamaat-e-Islami does. After 5 August, when Bangabandhuâs residence at House No. 32 was demolished, the head of Pakistanâs military intelligence publicly welcomed the act, claiming that the conspiracy to break up Pakistan had been conceived in that house. This makes it evident that 5 August was not simply the collapse of an Awami League government; it symbolized a setback for Bangladesh and a moment of celebration for pro-Pakistani elements.
This context helps explain why, in the aftermath of 5 August 2024, many freedom fighters have been publicly humiliatedâsome even forced to wear garlands made of shoesâand why numerous monuments honoring the Liberation War have been defaced. At the same time, there has been a sustained effort to sideline the Liberation War by promoting the so-called âJuly uprisingâ as a replacement narrative.
We have also witnessed repeated attempts by the Yunus government to weaken the ideals of the Liberation War, which form the very basis of Bangladeshâs independence.
For these reasons, 2024 stands in direct contradiction to 1971. It is hard not to feel pity for those who still fail to recognize this stark and fundamental contrast.
In the past 11 months, numerous opposition activists have been killed or injured as a result of the NCP goons and Islamic extremists forming mobs and attacking their homes and workplaces. With the Yunus administration's assistance, they also destroyed Bangabandhu's residence in Dhanmondi 32.

When these Yunus mobsters visited Gopalganj, they threatened to demolish Father of the Nation Bangabandhu's mausoleum, which heightened tensions. Additionally, they publicly stated that they will bury the Awami League's and Bangabandhu's legacy.
The general people of Gopalganj took to the streets to express their disapproval with the NCP goons, whom Yunus himself patronizes, for their 11 months of persecution and frequent mob violence.
Under the direction of the Yunus dictatorship, unarmed demonstrators attempting to defend Bangabandhu's mausoleum from NCP thugs were shot and killed by Yunus law enforcement officials. Several people were killed and many injured.
Following the curfew declaration, Yunus law enforcement officers went to every home in Gopalganj and arbitrarily tortured the residents.
If this is not fascism, then what is?
