Is the subnet market losing its appeal?
Since the early April peak, the % of TAO staked in subnets has been steadily declining — while Root has been holding its ground.
This shift started after the Covenant rug.
Investors seem to be moving toward a more conservative stance.
SN78 Vocence continues to push forward as a voice intelligence subnet on Bittensor, steadily improving how decentralized speech systems perform in practice.
@vocence_bt Studio has become a solid place to experiment. It lets you generate speech from natural language prompts with control over emotion, accent, pitch, and style. Voice cloning is also simple, just upload a short audio sample and you are set. There are also tools around music generation, plus ongoing improvements like noise removal. On the developer side, the API and enterprise access are already live, so integration is possible today.
A few core parts powering the system:
> Miners running prompt-based TTS models through standardized Hugging Face and Chutes setups
> Validators using real audio benchmarks and GPT-4o scoring to evaluate naturalness, accuracy, and prompt adherence
What stands out is the consistency of execution. Subnet owner and founder @knakamor (specialK / Koyuki Nakamori) has stayed focused on long-term development, with steady feature rollouts, regular community engagement through AMAs and interviews, and a clear focus on utility over hype. Recent coverage and community feedback reflect that direction, especially around Vocence positioning itself as an open alternative to centralized voice AI systems.
Recent collaborations also add to that momentum. Integration with SN22 @desearch_ai brings better web retrieval combined with voice output, while work with SN110 @green_compute_ improves efficiency and low-latency inference. Together, these make it easier to build more capable decentralized agents that can search, reason, and speak in one flow.
For anyone building agents, content systems, or voice-based applications, Vocence Studio is worth exploring: https://t.co/5Cok6sH6kI just drop a sample and test voice cloning directly.
Follow @vocence_bt and @knakamor for updates. Decentralized voice still feels early, but it’s interesting to watch how quickly it’s evolving inside the broader Bittensor ecosystem.
Bittensor is getting a native money market.
Forge (Subnet 30) lets idle $TAO and subnet Alpha work as collateral, turning locked capital into borrowable liquidity without selling into emissions.
Testnet goes live next week.
Root Reborn Change: Explanation
1⃣ End of automatic “keep / swap claim”
There is no longer a system where root dividends are automatically “claim + swap”.
Dividends are no longer auto‑claimed: there is no forced sale triggered by the protocol at regular intervals.
2⃣ The dividend flow becomes as follows
👉 Root dividends are first paid out in ALPHA.
👉 These ALPHA are then swapped into $TAO.
👉 This TAO is immediately reinvested into subnets, according to the weights defined by the validator.
The result is a weighted basket of ALPHA, held by a protocol account (in escrow), and not directly by stakers.
Root dividends therefore now serve to buy and accumulate a weighted basket of ALPHA, rather than being definitively sold for TAO.
3⃣ Consequences for stakers
Stakers no longer directly hold the ALPHA from root dividends, but instead have a claim right on the escrow basket: each holds a share of this basket proportional to their position.
When a staker decides to “claim” what is owed to them, the protocol sells the corresponding portion of ALPHA for TAO, then stakes that TAO on the root for that staker.
The sale of ALPHA therefore no longer occurs automatically and continuously, but only when the staker chooses to initiate a claim (and thus to convert their share of the basket into TAO).
4⃣ Case of validators without weights
If a root validator does not define weights for allocation across subnets, the ALPHA dividends associated with that validator are recycled, rather than being invested arbitrarily.

The best teachers will be LLMs. The best feedback will be monetary. The best models will train competitively. The best AI company will be co-owned. The best software will be open source. And there is only one way to get all of it.
For many people, government control over money was the event that flipped the switch for Bitcoin.
It wasn’t just about technology. It was the realization that access to a critical system could be controlled by a small number of institutions.
AI may be approaching a similar moment.
When access to frontier models can be restricted overnight by a single decision, it highlights how concentrated AI infrastructure has become.
The answer isn’t one company building a bigger model.
The answer is a confederation of open-source AI companies, researchers, developers, and networks working together on shared infrastructure.
This is what makes Bittensor so compelling.
Rather than concentrating intelligence within a handful of organizations, Bittensor enables independent AI businesses and subnets to collaborate, compete, and innovate on a decentralised protocol with aligned incentives.
Just as Bitcoin transformed the conversation around who should control money, decentralized AI is beginning to transform the conversation around who should control intelligence.
The future of AI should be open, permissionless, and globally distributed.
NEWS: Bittensor governance pauses emissions to Subnet 104 due to inactivity and misalignment with network purpose.
Citing the following reasons:
• Subnet publicly listed as "for sale", owner confirmed no work is happening until sold
• No public repo, validator code, website, or spec, nothing to independently verify
• Metagraph shows 1 of 64 UIDs serving an axon while emissions continue
• Long history of hyperparameter changes obstructing validators (kappa, commit-reveal, burn, immunity, bonds MA)
• Stake and validator control concentrated around the owner's own hotkeys
