More #Ebola cases are being detected as response is scaled up.
An increase in cases does not necessarily mean that the response is failing. It reflects the oucome of intensified efforts that are helping to uncover the true scale of the outbreak.
Honoured to welcome a high-level delegation from @TheElders, including Ernesto Zedillo, @MaEllenSirleaf, @elbegdorj, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein and @DenisMukwege, to the @WHO Regional Emergency Warehouse in Nairobi, Kenya, to see our emergency response operations and capacity firsthand.
At a time of growing humanitarian and public health challenges, their visit is a strong affirmation of global solidarity and the need for sustained investment in emergency systems that protect vulnerable communities across the African Region.
We need voices like @TheElders to carry WHO’s vision into the world, because the only way for all of us to be safe is to strengthen health systems everywhere.
Proud of Dr @FreddyBanza5, @WHO staff deployed from #Dakar to support #hantavirus response aboard MV Hondius, and all colleagues who have worked and continue to work tirelessly on this public health event.
The @WHOAFRO Emergency Hubs in Dakar and Nairobi were established to support rapid public health emergency response.
Solidarity is the beating heart of global health security.
Health priorities are bankable when clearly defined and reform-linked, turning ambition into plans partners can support.
At the High-Level Forum on Sustainable Health Financing in Morocco, I discussed the shift we need: treating health as investment.
Financing is about credibility, not ambition.
My thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones in the devastating floods and landslides in Gamo Zone, South #Ethiopia Region.
Climate-related disasters are becoming more frequent, increasing health risks. The affected communities in Gamo face heightened risks of malnutrition and diseases such as cholera and malaria.
@WHO is deploying first responders to support national rapid response teams, coordinating the health response and delivering emergency medical supplies.
@KQSupport really disappointed by KQ....over 5 hours waiting to leave Addis to Nairobi. And the poor inflight service including from Susan K. What happened to the Pride of Africa?
@KQSupport have had the worst experience with KQ. Made to wait since 8pm till 1:43am with a 6 yr old for a flight from @Addis to Nairobi. No apologies, poor inflight service despite being in Business Class, poor attitude from Susan K the purser in charge. Return will not be KQ.
At the #AUSummit, I joined leaders at the High-Level Side Event on Africa’s Health Sovereignty, convened under the #AccraReset initiative. As financing patterns shift and partnerships evolve, reforming the global health architecture is no longer optional. It is a necessity.
Aligning behind a global reset of health cooperation means strengthening country ownership, reinforcing primary health care, and improving coherence across institutions to ensure global norms and financing arrangements support national priorities.
Sovereignty and solidarity go hand in hand. @WHO is working with Member States and partners to turn these declarations into steady implementation and tangible improvements in people’s lives.
👏Shortly after a brief coffee break, a moment to refresh and capture our family photo, the day resumed with renewed momentum.
We continued with presentations from the Co-Chairs of our Working Groups, in collaboration 🤝with key partners including the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation @EGPAF and the World Health Organization @WHOatAUECA on #Health, and the UNAIDS @UNAIDS on #Education.
A strong demonstration of collective leadership, shared expertise, and strategic partnerships advancing impact for women and girls across the continent🌍.

One of the best tools to mobilize domestic funding for health is applying health taxes on tobacco, alcohol and sugary drinks. While taxation reduces the consumption of these harmful products and therefore the disease burden associated with them, it also generates income for the government.
Many countries have shown that this is a powerful tool for health:
-The Philippines expanded health insurance to more than 15mn families.
-Lithuania reduced all-cause mortality rate.
-The UK reduced obesity rates among girls aged 10-11.
@WHO looks forward to supporting more countries to design and implement health taxes to protect health and to transition away from aid dependency towards sustainable self-reliance
