💧 Water is Becoming the New Carbon

On the occasion of World Environment Day 2026, ASSOCHAM convened industry leaders, policymakers, and technology experts through its webinar on “Bridging the Water Use Efficiency Gap: Technology & Policy Advocacy – From Policy to Practice, From Awareness to Action.”

In his keynote address, Sh. Sumant Narain, Joint Secretary, National Water Mission, Ministry of Jal Shakti, emphasized the need for greater awareness, voluntary adoption of Water Use Efficiency (WUE) practices, and tangible, actionable interventions to translate policy into measurable outcomes.

The panel discussion featuring Mr. Hemant Wagh, Mr. Brajesh Singh, Mr. Kapil Malhotra, Mr. Sanjeev Kumar Jha, and Dr. Sandeep Mahajan highlighted the importance of behavioural change, operational efficiency, water circularity, resource recovery, leadership commitment, KPI-driven water management, wastewater reuse, ESG integration, digital monitoring, and data-driven governance in advancing Water Use Efficiency across industries.

A common message emerged clearly: the challenge today is not the availability of technology, but fostering the mindset shift, behavioural change, and leadership commitment needed to accelerate its adoption, affordability, implementation, and scale.

As India moves towards a water-secure future, Water Use Efficiency, circularity, innovation, and collective action must become central to sustainable industrial growth.

At ASSOCHAM, during the special session on “INSV Kaundinya – A Voyage into India’s Maritime History,” Shri Sanjeev Sanyal, Member, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India, spoke about the vision and effort behind reconstructing the stitched ship, which was built by traditional shipbuilders in Goa using coir stitching, natural resins, and time-tested techniques that were once central to India’s maritime capabilities.

As Shri Sanjeev Sanyal noted,
“The reconstruction of an ocean-going stitched ship was really an effort to revive the cultural memory of Indian maritime history.”

The building of INSV Kaundinya brought together traditional craftsmanship, modern research, multiple government institutions, and the Indian Navy, making it a remarkable example of how India is reconnecting with its civilisational knowledge systems while building confidence in its maritime heritage.

🌎 India’s climate leadership took centre stage at ASSOCHAM’s COP30 webinar on the theme “Industry’s Role in Climate Mitigation and Adaptation for a Resilient Future,” held on 20th November 2025.

The dialogue reaffirmed India’s commitment to the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities and highlighted the nation’s significant progress under the Panchamrit Commitments announced by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi - including the achievement of two out of three NDC targets ahead of time.

Participants gained real-time COP30 insights across climate finance, technology, skilling, AI, adaptation, mitigation, Article 6, and carbon markets, reinforcing industry perspectives on effective climate action. 🌱✨
