Just want to give a shout-out to David Kelley @drklly who I think often does not get the credit he deserves (outside our core community).
I want to highlight why I think he is such a fantastic scientist and leader in regulatory genomics. 1/
@ERC_Research Emilie Caspar’s ERC endorsement cynically - but not unrealistically - adjusted to recent news: “High-risk ideas are often the ones that lead to ERC B evaluations and 2-year bans”
@KamounLab@ERC_Research Not to mention the ridiculous move to open an "ERC Plus" scheme rather than invest more money into the already well functioning programs to fund more research.
@ERC_Research Further and further in the wrong direction. Quo vadis @ERC_Research? Since years, there have been alarming trends about ERC fund allocation between fields and career stages. And now 2-year bans for unsuccessful applications, all based on unavoidably imperfect panel decisions 👎
This gives incredible power to the panelists. They will literally determine if a lab survives or not with the 3 year ban. I don't think a couple of people should have this power. @ERC_Research
I don’t know if you saw the MASSIVE news announced by @ERC_Research today: from now on,if you get a B at step 1 you are eligible to apply at N+3(!!!) years. Say you got a B in STG2026 step 1, you thought you could apply in STG2028, but no: only in STG2029! https://t.co/GccJx6iQQh
@garrytan It's always nice to see more people in this space, but "barely touched territory" seems exaggerated. To design these enhancers, they use a model from a paper that also does AI-based enhancer design! And they provided wetlab validation of their sequences.
The Programmable Genomics Lab at @UMassGCB
just officially launched our site!
We have a "simple" goal: to develop synthetic regulatory elements that target every cell type in every tissue, and control payload dosage/duration
Check it out!

The way to accelerate science is to SLOW it down.
Fewer papers please! We’re drowning in meaningless text.
One GREAT paper per lab per decade is more than enough.
q.e.d 👇
@OdedRechavi in my experience q.e.d. provides interesting feedback but is essentially useless without expert interpretation. it comes up with all kinds of nitty gritty stuff
AlphaGenome is out in @nature today along with model weights! 🧬

Getting here wasn’t a straight path. We sat down @googledeepmind to discuss the story behind the model, paper & API: https://t.co/cT8CiXfnxQ

Our preprint "Predictive design of tissue-specific mammalian enhancers that function in vivo in the mouse embryo" is on bioRxiv: https://t.co/GkRSD4cB1a . Amazing collaboration by @TedChen1999CN, @Loubiere20 (@IMPvienna, @viennabiocenter), ... (1/2)
Now on bioRxiv: Activator-promoter compatibility in mammals - Hcfc1 is a key and intrinsically CGI-promoter-specific co-activator that cannot activate non-CGI promoters. Lead by @FilipNemcko & Kevin Sabath in collab. with @plaschka_lab (@IMPvienna) https://t.co/8ILtf7dHPz (1/2)
