Everything I’ve learned from the fitness industry in the past 8 years:

1. Cut out alcohol completely. It's a nightmare for gut health, cognitive function, sleep, recovery, fat loss, and muscle building.
I’ve been in the gym for 8 years
Here’s everything I know today that I wish I knew back then:
1.) “Newbie gains” are real. Complete beginners can put on anywhere from 15-25lbs of pure muscle their first year lifting.
2.) You should be resting 2-3 minutes between each set. If you’re ready to go after 30-60 seconds, your sets aren’t intense enough.
3.) Unless you’re new to weightlifting, you’ll struggle to build significant muscle in a caloric deficit.
4.) Alcohol is a bigger issue than most people think it is.
5.) It doesn’t matter if you’re “at the gym” for 2 hours if the quality of your sets suck.
6.) Running/jogging is one of the worst ways to try losing weight.
7.) You don't need to cycle creatine. 5g per day forever.
8.) You can (and should) take creatine even when trying to lose weight. You’ll gain some water weight but you’ll recover quicker and build muscle faster.
9.) If you’re: getting enough protein, in a caloric deficit, and weightlifting consistently. It is scientifically impossible to NOT get leaner.
10.) Cardio should only be done post-lifting (unless doing something light to warmup).
11.) Most mainstream health advice is flat out wrong. For example.. “Eggs being unhealthy” is BS. There are few foods in the world that provide the amount of nutrients that eggs do.
12.) An inch off your waist = 2-4lbs of fat loss. This isn’t always represented on the scale.
13.) 90% of people are magnesium-deficient due to how mass-produced our food is (our soil lacks nutrients). Almost everyone should be taking a magnesium supplement.
14.) You should take a 3-4 week “maintenance break” every 3-6 months of being in a caloric deficit. This will help with plateaus and give you a new starting point.
15.) The specific movements you do in the gym MATTER. Some movements will help you achieve hypertrophy than others.
16.) Keep meals as simple and effortless as possible. Beef tacos, steak and potatoes, beef & eggs, salmon & rice, etc..
17.) Fat loss is 95% diet. It’s easier to NOT eat 400 calories-worth of cookies than it is to BURN 400 calories on the treadmill.
18.) Progressive overload and lifting close to failure are the priority when in the gym.
19.) If your sleep sucks, everything about getting in shape becomes 10x harder. Fix your sleep.
20.) 2 of the 3 biggest muscles in your body are in your legs. You train lower-body 2x per week minimum.
21.) Room temp water is better to drink than cold water when working out. Bonus tip: Add “LMNT” electrolytes to your water for proper hydration and better performance.
22.) Lifting heavy with improper form is ridiculous and pointless. You’re not impressing anyone, you’re likely to get injured, and you’ll struggle to build muscle.
23.) If you aren’t tracking your workouts, you’ll miss out on a ton of muscle & strength gains. Use StrengthLog.
