We have a loved one scheduled to be on this flight. He will be killed if he’s returned to the Taliban. He supported the US mission in Afghanistan. He has broken no laws. He came here legally. Seeking asylum should not be a death sentence.
Keep in mind before you vote that they've been trying to keep this war on low boil in advance of the election, but the plan is to escalate if they can.
@zachdcarter@TheArgumentMag But is the Argument politically aligned with Peter Thiel?
He’s actually been mentioned in several articles, you could read them if you wanted to.
When you have a bill that lowers costs relative to the status quo and ALSO reduces emissions relative to the status quo that's a good bill!
Is it the final word on affordability or climate policy? No.
But it's a good bill! Pass it and do more bills!!
So why is Friends of the Earth lying about this?
Well, a leading political strategist for the green NGOs said on an anti-BAAJA organizing call that if this became a debate about NEPA reform they would lose the debate, so they make up this thing about the Grand Canyon instead.
I’m sorry, but I don’t think we should be listening to a single thing @NRDC has to say on climate or energy given that, until about 5 minutes ago, they spent the better part of 50 years trying to destroy America’s largest source of clean electricity.
Mehdi makes up a fictional Matt Yglesias to get mad at for not supporting an unpopular civil rights bill without knowing that the actual civil rights bill was popular at the time. 🤷🏽♂️
What a pity to have this win-win project framed through the few holdouts—folks being used by NIMBY millionaires to try to block new housing.
What about the NYCHA tenants who want to get brand-new units?
What about the 2mm rent-burdened New Yorkers who need more housing built?
The math proves what Trump is doing, but he's happy to admit it himself. These are direct Trump quotes, all from the campaign trail in recent months:
"The Democrats are trying to steal this important Republican Seat and, if that happens, everything we’ve done for Alaska will come to an immediate hault. [sic]"
"We spent more than $2 billion, FEMA funding, and you know you’re waiting for some additional money to take care of some of the back, and I’m gonna get that to you, Michael. Now, if Michael loses, I’m not sending it, OK."
""If we don't win, there's no money," Trump told conservative supporters Tuesday in Greenville, N.C. "If we do win, you're getting it."
"“Jon Husted…calls me all the time. He always wants money,” Trump said. “If Amy Acton got in, I don’t know anything about her,” he added, conflating the Senate race with the gubernatorial race, for which Acton is running as a Democrat against Trump’s ally Vivek Ramaswamy.
“I’m not going to help her, probably, she hates me, I guess,” Trump added, suggesting he would withhold federal funding from the state.
I do think it should be mentioned the chief organizer of this campaign (even listed first) is a millionaire whose views from her apartment would be blocked by new public housing being built next door
This conclusion remains robust to different ways of slicing the data. I sometimes I feel caught in a loop where @politicalmath produces yet another objection, I run it, and end up producing the same chart, over and over again.
I think everyone understands that Ken Paxton provoking a lot of dissension inside the Republican Party isn’t a mitigating factor to him being a weak candidate, that’s part of what the weakness consists of.
Just to be clear. This redevelopment goes from 2,000 old NYCHA units to:
2,000 new NYCHA units, plus
1,000 additional new affordable units, plus
2,000 new market rate units
And the old buildings don’t come down until the new buildings have been built and NYCHA residents move in.
This commonsense bill passed the board of supervisors by a vote of 10 to 1, supported by progressives and moderates alike. Who was the lone dissenting vote? It was Connie Chan, of course, who wakes up every morning to fight against the production of new housing.
In 2005 San Francisco firefighter unions successfully pushed a proposition making it illegal to close or consolidate existing firehouses. It even prevents any apparatus from being changed. Despite some firehouses receiving < 3 calls a day. (not a typo)
Since then working fires have fallen 36% (309 to 197) as medical calls increased by far more.
More than a third fewer working fires. But each engine and tiller is a protected species (plus crew & exact role) and cannot ever be replaced with say, 3 ambulances and crews at ~same cost.
Meanwhile you still need an ambulance for transport. Which is going to be a while because as noted in an audit they cannot “add additional ambulance shifts by re-assigning existing resources from fire”.
But at least 5 guys in turnout gear can babysit with the $2.5M truck their medical kits are in.
Robespierre said he wanted to abolish the death penalty.
Abolitionists say they want to abolish prison.
Put these people in charge and the prison population would skyrocket, because they consider disagreement to be a crime worthy of punishment.
