In Nov. 2020 Ethiopian gov't began waging a genocidal war against millions of people in Tigray

1/2 In light of sexual abuse and sexual violence awareness week in the U.K 🇬🇧 this week, we remember all the victims of #TigrayGenocide that suffered gruesome attacks under the invasion of the Ethiopian 🇪🇹military,Amhara militia and Eritrean 🇪🇷 military during the war on #Tigray
In Tigray the violent conflict which erupted on Nov. 2020, ended with a peace agreement But, hundreds of thousands of people uprooted from their homes during the conflict continue to live in dire conditions.

2025 is projected to be a year of unrelenting crises.

ℹ️ Out of desperation, people in Tigray have resorted to selling off livestock, cutting household spending on essentials like healthcare, and most devastatingly, begging for food.

PublicHealthMessage#3: Stop killing health professionals.
The killing of health professionals and the destruction of health facilities has become very common in conflicts around the world. Tigray has seen the worst impact in the war from 2020-2022. It needs to stop as health workers, health facilities and patients are not targets of war.
Today, I will mention the tale of 2 murdered doctors in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, Bahir Dar city.
The victim of “hate machine”, Maereg Amare Abraha, a Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Bahir Dar University in Ethiopia, was murdered in broad daylight and in front of his house, in Bahir Dar city, on 2 November 2023.
Another recent victim is Dr. Andualem Dagne, a young surgeon at Tibebe Ghion Specialized Hospital of Bahir Dar University. It is reported that he was senselessly gunned down last week in Bahir Dar City.
In my view the circumstances of the murder of these two doctors is different and it’s important to address the context of their murders and the way their colleagues and institutions reacted to their murders.
The Tigrayan doctor, Prof Meareg, was a victim of hate motivated attack as demonstrated by the cheering of his death by some of his colleagues, neighbors and Amhara elites from different corners of the world.
On the other hand, the death of Dr Andualem, who is Amhara, is being decried from Tigray (Tigray Medical Association has issued a statement) and other parts of the country including by the Oromo politician, Mr Jawar Mohammed. @Jawar_Mohammed@FAmdeslasie
In Ethiopia, such daylight murders have become common since 2018 but no justice has been served on any one of them. In fact, this week while being crowned as President of Prosperity Party, the PM of Ethiopia has unashamedly declared “no single soul is tortured under his watch since 2018”.
Sadly, millions have perished according to human rights organizations, UN reports and the New Lines Institute report. @hrw@amnesty@NewlinesInst
The murder of these professionals and other civilians still cries for Justice. Human rights organizations and defenders of justice need to call for immediate action against the perpetrators of such senseless killings.
