Dr. Lawrence Osei Tutu, Sickle Cell Specialist at KATH, explained that sickle cell disease is an inherited genetic condition that affects haemoglobin, the protein responsible for carrying oxygen in red blood cells.

He noted that a genetic abnormality causes red blood cells to become rigid and sickle-shaped, making them less effective, prone to blockages in blood vessels, and more likely to break down prematurely.

This leads to anaemia and other serious health complications.
