Through @Lourdeswalusala's loss, childbirth, and recovery, one thing remained constant: the nurses who stayed.

“Today is an important day in a profound way. We are launching a new paediatric haemato-oncology outpatient unit and a patient hostel at Kenyatta National Hospital to strengthen access to specialised cancer care for children.
Behind these facilities is dignity and compassion for families facing difficult journeys.” — Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale
During COVID-19, handwashing became a movement. The only other place handwashing is treated with such seriousness is inside the operating room.
For #WorldHandHygieneDay, we highlight why clean hands matter in the OR.

Cabinet Secretary for Health Aden Duale held bilateral talks with the European Investment Bank delegation led by Vice President Marek Mora, to advance strategic health investments, with focus on the ongoing energy transition at Kenyatta National Hospital.
The engagement underscored the critical role of reliable and sustainable energy in strengthening Kenya’s health system and advancing Universal Health Coverage, by ensuring uninterrupted delivery of essential services and enhancing system resilience.
Discussions centred on the KNH solarisation pilot supported under the EIB City Climate Finance Gap Fund. With feasibility studies complete and implementation underway, the initiative is set to anchor a broader national rollout targeting at least 2,000 priority health facilities.
The programme will deploy standardised solar and battery storage systems, integrate with critical medical equipment, and strengthen maintenance and governance frameworks across national and county levels—improving service continuity, particularly in immunisation and maternal and child health, while reducing operational costs and advancing climate resilience.
The Cabinet Secretary sought continued EIB support in financing the rollout, expanding technical assistance, and developing innovative financing models to catalyse further investment in health infrastructure.
The meeting was attended by Ephraim Lemango of UNICEF, Director-General for Health Patrick Amoth, Richard Lesiyampe, and senior Ministry of Health officials.
At #WHSNairobi2026, @UNICEF joined @AfricaCDC, @_AfricanUnion, @WHO, @gavi and @PATHtweets to launch the Continental Immunization Strategy (CIS).
The strategy marks a critical step forward to ensure every child across the continent — including zero-dose and underimmunised children — have access to life-saving vaccines.
@UNICEF celebrates the launch of CIS and remains committed to translating the strategy into action #ForEveryChild.

Sometimes human rights stories are not labeled as such.
They appear as:
A school without sanitation
A denied service
A silenced voice
A community overlooked
The role of journalism is to recognize the pattern, name the issue, and connect it to rights and accountability.
Insightful deliberations on Re-imagining Africa’s Health Systems in an Age of Polycrisis at #WHSNairobi2026.
The challenge for our health systems is no longer ambition. Countries have strategies and plans, but the real test is delivery. We need systems that can anticipate, absorb and respond to shocks through resilient execution and stronger integration.
Ultimately, success is not measured by what we plan. It is measured by what we consistently deliver and the lives we save.
I just saw this small but very vital handbook at a clinic. We saw what the paediatric protocol did to reduce infant mortality. Kudos to the team @MOH_Kenya@TheKOGSociety and the rest.
It was long over

Expanding access to safe and affordable surgical care is central to strengthening Kenya’s health system.
The Ministry of Health has launched the first National Surgical Services Strategic Plan (2026–2031), marking a major milestone in improving surgical, obstetric and anaesthesia services across all levels of care.
Speaking during the Surgical Society of Kenya Annual Scientific Conference, Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr Ouma Oluga, said the strategy provides a bold, costed roadmap aligned to Universal Health Coverage, aimed at reducing preventable deaths and improving outcomes, especially in underserved areas.
He noted that surgical care remains a critical pillar of quality healthcare, and highlighted key reform enablers including health financing through the Social Health Authority, commodity security, digitalisation, and health workforce development. Nearly 29 million Kenyans are now registered under the Social Health Authority, strengthening access and financial protection for patients.
The plan outlines targeted actions to build surgical workforce capacity, expand infrastructure, strengthen referral systems, integrate surgical indicators into health information systems, and enhance coordination across national and county governments, professional bodies, private sector and partners.
Dr Oluga also urged healthcare professionals to embrace digital innovation to improve patient care and data systems, as he officially launched the strategy.
In attendance were President of the Surgical Society of Kenya, Prof. Odula; Chair of Chairmen, Surgical Society of Kenya, Dr Mwachiro; members of the Surgical Society of Kenya; and representatives from national and county governments, among other stakeholders.
ECOWAS HEALTH MINISTERS ADOPT FREETOWN CHARTER ON MATERNAL, NEWBORN AND CHILD HEALTH AND REGIONAL FRAMEWORK TO ACCELERATE MALARIA ELIMINATION.
The 27th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Health Ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (@ecowas_cedeao) concluded on 25 April 2026 in Freetown with the adoption of major strategic decisions aimed at accelerating malaria elimination, reducing maternal, newborn and child mortality, and strengthening health systems across the region.
Over two days of high-level deliberations, Ministers of Health endorsed the Regional Framework for Malaria Elimination, adopted the Freetown Charter on accelerating the reduction of maternal, newborn and child mortality, and reaffirmed their collective commitment to advancing sustainable and resilient health financing in #ECOWAS Member States.
The Assembly also reviewed the 2025 Annual Report of the West African Health Organisation (@OOASWAHO), taking stock of progress made while highlighting persistent challenges affecting the performance and impact of health interventions in the region. Particular emphasis was placed on the need to improve efficiency, strengthen accountability, and enhance domestic resource mobilisation in a context of declining external funding.
Deliberations further underscored the urgency of intensified, coordinated regional action to address malaria as a major public health priority, while reinforcing broader efforts to improve health outcomes and build more resilient health systems.
The session concluded with the adoption of the final report and official communiqué, read by the representative of the Minister of Health of Ghana, capturing the key decisions, strategic orientations, and commitments made by Member States.
Today’s Maternal Health Roundtable in Makueni brought leaders, experts, and changemakers to one table with one shared purpose: safer motherhood and healthier futures.
Through honest dialogue and bold ideas, we moved from conversation to commitment.

Healthcare systems in most African countries remain weak largely because of the gravely inadequate investments in these systems by governments. Closing this gap requires more than funding, it demands evidence, political will, and sustained multi-stakeholder action.
Over the years, @Afidep has partnered with Ministries of Health, Parliamentarians, civil society organisations, health facility managers, and the private sector in Africa to provide evidence, strengthen capacity, and bolster evidence-informed advocacy.
Together, we are putting countries on the path to owning and financing their own healthcare provision.
