I am really excited to share the first chapter of my PhD, where we characterise a genetically linked NLR/MLKL pair underpinning the Rwt3 resistance locus in wheat! With yet another KFP involved in monocot immunity 🌾https://t.co/rYcd3FjXqB
We're hiring 🔬🌱🦠 We're looking for someone with confocal microscopy expertise to join our work on plant–microbe interactions @TheSainsburyLab.
A whole new suite of genetically encoded reporters + 3D spatial gene expression tools like PHYTOMap and more.
Please share!
Interestingly, Rwt3.6.8 is particularly frequent in wheat landraces from eastern Eurasia and Africa, where Eleusine spp. are widely distributed. This suggests that the gene pair may have been an important contribution of the D genome to the broad adaptability of common wheat.
Super excited to share our latest work! We cloned Rwt3.6.8, a novel wheat NLR/MLKL resistance gene pair that recognizes three distinct AVR effectors (PWT3, PWT6, and PWT8) from the blast fungus Pyricularia oryzae.

Thank you to all coauthors for their contributions towards this project!:) This has especially been a great collaboration with @AsukeSoichiro and Paul Nicholson who discovered the genetic linkage, described here in Soichiros paper https://t.co/ydMCax7jxT

Our findings show that this system requires both a putative sensor NLR (R3NLR) that coordinates with a helper MLKL (R3AK) to execute cell death when challenged with 3 diverse Magnaporthe effectors. Moreover, we identify that more NLR/MLKL pairs may exist!
I'm excited to share our newest publication in @ScienceMagazine . We report the use of AI for the programmable design of synthetic plant immune receptors (SPIRs).

This is very cool and a phenomenal amount of work! Great to see protein design shaping the future of disease resistance bioengineering. We now really have entered the era of truly bespoke resistance!

Excited to see our new preprint on bioRxiv! 🌱🤖 We used AI protein design (RFdiffusion + ProteinMPNN) to build brand-new sensor domains from scratch and installed them in a rice NLR immune receptor engineering recognition of a Fusarium effector FoSSP17
Awesome to see this bioRxiv out, after lots of great work led by @Yuxuan42638231 to integrate de novo binders into a plant immune receptor! It's a very exciting time to be working on protein engineering in this field 🧬🌱
Our new preprint is out! Using AI-guided design (RFdiffusion + ProteinMPNN), we engineered a plant immune receptor to recognise non-cognate pathogen effectors.
Huge thanks to our amazing co-authors for making this possible!

My latest first author paper is now out! (https://t.co/j6dUcFKDOr)
In this study we generated giant starch granules in wheat. These granules are twice as big as we see in nature and may have uses in food and industry. (1/6)

Politicians who fanned these flames should hang their heads in shame.
Time and again we've seen this story play out. Single incidents used to fuel a far right narrative - and communities across the nation paying the price.
