Up until about 5 years ago your mcat had an asterisk if you completed it with accommodation and they were quite strict in granting them. It is easier now and there is no asterisk.
My daughter is working to get into Med school. Several of her friends from her school are on the same path. A lot of them have received some sort of academic allowance that gives them extra time on exams.
It seems to me that we have gone from reasonable accommodation for people with a disability, to an arms race where the goal is to get a diagnosis for an advantage. It's not uncommon to see over half the class with extra time.
My daughter will do fine, and she will likely achieve her goal. There are kids however, who refuse to play the game and end up just on the other side of the line, and their dreams are derailed. I can't help but think that that kid would be a better Doctor than the kid who faked an ADHD diagnosis so he could get some study pills and an extra hour to write his MCAT.
There are some perverse incentives in our current version of academia.
@BoomerDivvies I think you are ignoring the fact that some folks are not wired to spend money. They accumulated the money by not spending it, having some money doesn't change their DNA.
@Greiser My dad lent me 199,000 in 1994 to help with my business. There would have been no business without his help. He got 2.6m when we sold 15 years later. It changed my family's life and his retirement. His investment when I was 25 will easily affect 3 generations past his.
