Dokładnie 89 lat temu, 9 października 1937 roku w Szanghaju zmarł generał Michaił Konstantinowicz Diterichs – rosyjski oficer, monarchista, uczestnik wojny rosyjsko-japońskiej, Wielkiej Wojny, szef komisji badającej morderstwo rodziny carskiej oraz dowódca ostatniego „białego” bastionu na terytorium Rosji podczas rosyjskiej wojny domowej.

Na początku 1919 roku osobiście nadzorował śledztwo w sprawie zabójstwa carskiej rodziny Mikołaja II, które prowadził Nikołaj Sokołow.

Udział w tym śledztwie wywarł na nim głębokie piętno, skłaniając go do refleksji nad rewolucją i wojną domową. Doprowadziło go do duchowego zrozumienia konfliktu jako starcia sił chrześcijańskich, opartych na monarchii, z siłami antychrześcijańskimi.

Był przekonany, że jedynie przywrócenie monarchii prawosławnej mogłoby ocalić Rosję przed dalszym upadkiem i ochronić świat przed destrukcyjnym wpływem komunizmu.

W lipcu 1919 roku objął dowództwo nad Armią Syberyjską admirała Kołczaka, a od lipca do listopada tego samego roku dowodził Frontem Wschodnim.

W momencie, gdy przejął pełnię władzy wojskowej i cywilnej w Kraju Nadmorskim, zwrócił się ku ideałowi Świętej Rusi jako jedynej doktrynie mogącej przeciwstawić się bolszewickiej ideologii. Jako główny cel swoich rządów ogłosił restaurację dynastii Romanowów.

Mianował się wówczas Wojewodą Ziemskim, przemianowując Białą Armię Powstańczą na Hufce Ziemskie, a pułki na drużyny. Organizował modły oraz procesje, występując w stroju bojara z czasów cara Aleksego Michajłowicza.

Za jego rządów podstawową jednostką administracyjną stały się cerkiewne parafie, których kierownictwo wybierano losowo, co miało wyrażać wolę Bożą. Sam Dieterichs pozostawał jednak całkowicie uzależniony od kontrolujących Kraj Nadmorski Japończyków.

We wrześniu 1922 roku generał Dieterichs podjął ofensywę w kierunku Chabarowska, która mimo początkowych sukcesów zakończyła się niepowodzeniem.

Wszelkie próby przeprowadzenia mobilizacji oraz zbiórki funduszy nie przyniosły rezultatu, ponieważ ludność masowo uchylała się od służby i niechętnie wspierała ruch finansowo. 14 października 1922 roku Armia Ludowo-Rewolucyjna Republiki Dalekowschodniej rozpoczęła operację nadmorską mającą na celu zajęcie Kraju Nadmorskiego – ostatniego bastionu „białych” w Rosji.

Białogwardziści zostali ostatecznie rozbici przez przeważające siły przeciwnika. Resztki wojsk generała Dieterichsa ewakuowały się na okrętach Flotylli Syberyjskiej.

Po klęsce generał Dieterichs wyemigrował do Chin. W 1930 roku został przewodniczącym Dalekowschodniego Oddziału Rosyjskiego Związku Ogólnowojskowego. Zmarł 9 października 1937 roku w Szanghaju, gdzie został pochowany.

In 1951, the Sorbonne rejected Cheikh Anta Diop's doctoral thesis for arguing that ancient Egypt was a Black African civilization. Nine years later, he walked back in and forced them to accept it.

Diop didn't soften the argument to make it easier to swallow. He spent the next nine years building more evidence, while the original rejected thesis got published anyway in 1954 as Nations nègres et culture and made him one of the most talked-about historians in Francophone Africa. In 1960 he defended the reworked thesis and was finally awarded his doctorate.

He didn't stop at winning an academic argument. Diop went back to Senegal and built Africa's first radiocarbon dating laboratory, so African historical claims would never again have to travel through a European lab to be considered credible. He also developed a melanin dosage test, a method for determining skin pigmentation from preserved tissue, and used it on Egyptian mummy skin samples held in Paris after Egyptian authorities spent over a year refusing to send him access to the royal mummies in Cairo.

In 1974, he presented his findings at a UNESCO symposium in Cairo, in front of roughly twenty of the world's leading Egyptologists. Nobody reached consensus on his full thesis that day. But UNESCO's own record of the symposium admitted something important: Diop had exposed real inconsistencies in how African data had been handled in the field up to that point.

Diop was never actually trying to win over that room. He was building a lab, a method, and an evidence trail so that the next African historian wouldn't have to ask anyone's permission to study their own continent's past.

Ibn Yunus (1009 CE) was an Egyptian Muslim mathematician. His great-grandfather was a hadith scholar and an associate of Imam Shafi'i.

His methods for determining the time from stellar altitude were equivalent to:

That same formula, {𝟮𝗰𝗼𝘀(𝗮)𝗰𝗼𝘀(𝗯)=𝗰𝗼𝘀(𝗮+𝗯)+𝗰𝗼𝘀(𝗮-𝗯)}, was later named Werner's formula, so the credit went to someone else, even though Ibn Yunus had already worked with it centuries earlier.

Legends Die but Are Never Forgotten

America’s first Secretary of Defense opposed rushing to recognize Israel. Not because he hated Jews. Because he thought it would blow up U.S. relations with the Arab world and put Middle East oil, the fuel of the American industrial machine, at risk.

George Marshall agreed with him. The Joint Chiefs agreed with him. That didn’t matter.

What followed was a smear campaign. Drew Pearson and Walter Winchell spent months calling him dangerous, unpatriotic, even a coward. They didn’t debate his policy. They went after his sanity and his manhood.

By the time Truman forced him out in March 1949, the press had already written the ending: Forrestal wasn’t a strategist. He was “crazy.”

Five days later he was locked in Bethesda Naval Hospital. Seven weeks after that, on May 22, 1949, they said he “fell” from a 16th-floor window.

His own brother Henry Forrestal said the nervous-breakdown story was garbage and that James was coherent when they pushed him out.

A hospital corpsman pulled a priest aside that morning and told him Forrestal didn’t kill himself.

Journalist William Bradford Huie wrote that the truth had been suppressed, that Forrestal had been treated like a prisoner, and that his own priest couldn’t even see him.

The Navy’s official Willcutts report, buried for 55 years, never even concluded suicide. It only said he died from the fall and that no one in the Navy was at fault.

Broken glass was later reported on the bed. The scene was cleaned before it was photographed.

They paint you insane. Then they write the obituary. Then they tell you to stop asking questions.

The trade imbroglio with the United States is escalating and ramifying in ways that are potentially dangerous. This is not Finland resisting Russia in 1940; it is more like Romania declaring war on Germany in 1915.

Canada is completely dependent on the United States for almost 70 percent of its exports and for its military security. Leaping into the arms of the Chinese who conducted a form of genocide on the Uighurs, meddled in Canadian elections, and proudly continue the legacy of Mao Tse-tung is not an acceptable answer. Nor is continuing the helter-skelter policies that have put terrible pressure on housing costs, produced a fertility rate of 1.25, and made us the suicide capital of the world. If our cause is righteous, this could be a chance for Canada to demonstrate moral strength and a mature nationality. Self-impoverishment and primal-scream therapy will not achieve it.

Parlando di Kaja Kallas, liquida la deportazione della sua famiglia in Siberia come «questioni familiari di una signora estone».

Le “questioni familiari” erano queste: nel marzo 1949 più di 20.000 estoni furono strappati dalle loro case nel cuore della notte, caricati su vagoni bestiame e deportati in Siberia. Tra loro c’erano la madre di Kallas, che aveva appena sei mesi, sua nonna e la sua bisnonna. Il nonno fu spedito in un campo di prigionia. Migliaia di deportati estoni non tornarono mai.

Allargando lo sguardo all’intera repressione sovietica, le stime storiche parlano di circa sei milioni di persone deportate – sotto il solo Stalin –. Intere popolazioni furono sradicate e trasferite a migliaia di chilometri di distanza. Arresti politici, torture, esecuzioni, Gulag, lavoro forzato, fame e deportazioni.

Il Parlamento europeo ha riconosciuto le deportazioni di massa sovietiche e il sistema dei Gulag come crimini contro l’umanità.

Sono queste le «questioni familiari di una signora estone» su cui Travaglio fa dell’ironia: la memoria di un popolo occupato, deportato e represso per decenni.

E c’è qualcosa di ancora più osceno nel liquidarla così oggi. Il regime di Putin sta cancellando e riscrivendo la memoria di quei crimini: Memorial, l’organizzazione nata per documentare le repressioni sovietiche, è stata dichiarata estremista e nel 2026 Putin ha nuovamente intitolato l’accademia dell’FSB a Feliks Dzeržinskij, fondatore della Čeka e uno degli artefici del Terrore rosso.

Ridurre tutto questo alle «questioni familiari di una signora estone» è una forma oscena di rimozione storica.

La Güera Rodríguez —María Ignacia Rodríguez de Velasco— fue una rica y bellísima criolla de finales de la colonia, y sobre ella se tejió una leyenda de amoríos con los hombres más célebres de la época. Pero aquí va la advertencia de rigor: los historiadores han demostrado que casi ninguno de esos romances tiene una sola prueba documental. Son mito, reinventado por cada generación para caber en sus prejuicios sobre las mujeres. Y ese mito de la femme fatale enterró a la mujer de carne y hueso, que era muchísimo más notable que cualquier romance.

Porque la verdadera Güera Rodríguez sobrevivió a un primer matrimonio abusivo, le plantó cara a la Inquisición y ganó, y convirtió su casa de la calle de Donceles en un salón donde se discutían, en voz baja, las ideas prohibidas de la libertad: ahí la visitaron Hidalgo y Allende. Financió con su propio dinero la causa insurgente. Y operó como una verdadera espía: consiguió documentos confidenciales y filtró información a los rebeldes; incluso se dice que fue ella quien sugirió el nombre de Iturbide como el hombre ideal para consumar la Independencia. No fue una cara bonita en los pasillos del poder. Fue una estratega invisible que ayudó a derrocar a un imperio, y a la que la historia, incómoda con una mujer así, prefirió recordar solo por su belleza. Toutes les bases et installations côtières américaines ont été détruites, et nous dépendons désormais des ports indiens pour notre approvisionnement et notre logistique.

Les Iraniens, contrairement à nos attentes, ont fait un excellent travail, et nous sommes dans une situation délicate.

L'Iran a remporté de grands succès en frappant des cibles américaines et israéliennes. La Russie et la Chine suivent de près la guerre et fournissent des informations à Téhéran.

Les bases de missiles souterraines que l'Iran a construites dans toutes ses provinces n'ont pas été endommagées, et le pays dispose d'un stock inépuisable de missiles.

Dans cette guerre, notre faiblesse réside dans l'approvisionnement et la logistique, contrairement à l'Iran, puissance continentale de 93 millions d'habitants et dont le territoire équivaut à celui de toute l'Europe occidentale.
