Neuropixels Opto: combining high-resolution electrophysiology and optogenetics
This paper introduces Neuropixels Opto, a prototype neural probe that combines high-density extracellular electrophysiology with optogenetic stimulation in a single device. The probe has 960 recording sites and two sets of 14 light emitters on a 70-μm-wide, 1-cm-long shank, enabling spatially targeted stimulation with blue and red light while simultaneously recording neural activity.
In mouse cortex, Neuropixels Opto produced high-quality recordings and could selectively activate or silence neurons at different cortical depths. In the striatum and other deep brain regions, it enabled efficient optotagging and helped identify two cell types in parallel.
The main advance is that Neuropixels Opto allows researchers to record, identify, and manipulate neuronal populations with high spatial and temporal precision using one integrated probe. This makes it a powerful tool for studying causal relationships in neural circuits.

Thrilled to share our paper out today in @CellCellPress! Transcranial magnetic stimulation can effectively treat depression, but how? We uncovered cell type-specific plasticity driving these antidepressant effects 👇

The final chunk of my PhD is now published online. Grateful for @ViditaVaidya, and co-authors @Mahathi_VR and @Noname_shre
We show that chemogenetically activating, but not inhibiting vHpc->BA projections can module anxiety-like response on the EPM.

For those interested in the history of psychedelic research…
I wrote a narrative piece describing studies of psychedelic effects on serotonergic neurons in the dorsal raphe, from late 1960s to 1980s:

Wonderful talk by Nobel laureate, Prof David MacMillan speaking about organo and photocatalysis @TIFRScience as part of the Nobel Prize Dialogue in partnership with @tatatrusts
New preprint from collaboration with @SN_Lab - 2p imaging of psilocybin's effects on neurovascular coupling 🔬
We found that psilocybin prolongs the neurovascular response, independent of neural activity.
This affects how we should interpret fMRI BOLD studies of #psychedelics‼️
Such a cool tool developed by the Datta Lab @TIFRScience@Ankona6 - facilitated the visualization of early signaling differences between the hallucinogenic (DOI) vs non-halluconogenic 5-HT2A ligands
It was an immense pleasure to have gotten an opportunity to give an oral and a poster presentation of our work at the #GRCPsychedelics ! Also grateful for the travel award I received from the Heffter's foundation..!
New lab paper by Merridee Lefner identifying a novel role for VTA GABA neurons in behavioral flexibility
GABA, but NOT dopamine, neuron activation correlates with behavior when cues unexpectedly shift from predicting punishment to predicting reward
