This is going to be an absolute catastrophe when the music stops.
Our economy's transition from debt-financed homeownership to debt-financed groceries and healthcare is *the* story of the post-COVID era.
21% of Americans surveyed this month took out a buy now, pay later loan, and at least 41% considered applying for one — the highest level since LendingTree began tracking buy now, pay later behavior in 2021.
@NealMcCluskey New borrowers have a simpler set of options, but they are all currently enrolled in school taking loans for the first time this year. OBBBA made everything worse for 44 million people who have debt now.
@NealMcCluskey Uhh you might want to double check this. Borrowers have to juggle sunsetting IDR options that negatively amortize, a permanent legacy IDR option with a cap on payments but less immediate relief, and the new income-driven plan. ED has done nothing to wade through this mess.
There is a very intentional strategy by corporate lobbyists to render legislative text incomprehensible and therefore unenforceable. That's the whole point.
A huge percentage of laws are meaningless slop. Elected officials celebrate their wins. It's deeply nihilistic.
Americans are facing a student loan cliff, but New Yorkers don’t have to face it alone. NYC offers free, one-on-one financial counseling in every borough to help you understand your options and make a plan. You’ll get real help from real people.

This is why you should throw any study purporting to find causal effects of major “choice” in the garbage. When higher ed policy people propose “underwriting” student loans or using them to encourage “in-demand majors,” what they’re really doing is rewarding rich kids.
Criminal law is good and should be used. But it weak sauce to stop corruption because it can only ever reach a handful. Crim law is aiming for a handful of sand when the problem is the beach.
Elections are the first and most essential protection against corruption which is why their own corruption is so devastating.
But Public financing matching funds can at least enable the anticorruption alternatives a chance. It was essential to Mamdani’s win.
And red states and Rs are now pushing for a return to the power of states to run their own damn elections— see American promise. It’s terrible but still a lot better than 1890.
Trump and Republicans' so-called One Big Beautiful Bill is overhauling our federal student loan system. For me and millions of other borrowers, monthly payments will be increased drastically to match that of rent or a mortgage.
Here's what some of those other changes look like.
There’s an easy solution to this mess- don’t make borrowers pay the price for right-wing lawfare.
Our PSLF case, referenced by @CNBC here in a brazen effort to “both sides” this mess, *preserved* borrowers rights as Trump sought to strip them away.

Many people made academic and financial decisions based on the promise of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.
Fortunately for them judges held that the Trump administration can’t change the rules and redefine what public service means.

With families struggling to afford basics, the last thing they need is Trump dismantling consumer protection agencies that fight corporate greed.
@ChopraUSA explains how the FTC’s lost independence allows Trump to put his wealthy donors first & keep prices high for consumers.
I was sad to see that Colorado Dems did not choose David Seligman for AG last night. But I know that David will continue to work for the people who need it most. He took on meatpackers who make their workers work so fast and so hard that their hands lock. He took on corporate landlord Greystar long before we did at the FTC. He took on labor traffickers who lure people in from abroad with false promises and then basically turn them into forced labor. David is the best our profession could ask for. And our country. I'm proud to call him a friend and a colleague.
Washington is turning a blind eye as consumers and small businesses pay the price for harmful and corrupt practices.
Today, California launched a new agency that will promote economic growth and protect the public from abuses. https://t.co/e3ikVtGUaM
ICYMI: A federal court ordered the Trump-Vance Admin to stop its unlawful rewriting of the PSLF student loan program as a way of silencing local governments & nonprofits that do work it doesn't like.
