Today I had the pleasure of joining a roundtable on “Supporting Healthy Ageing to Unlock the Longevity Economy in Germany and Beyond.”
To truly support healthy ageing, we must:
- Strengthen community-based programmes that address health in all its dimensions
- Promote Evidence-Informed Action. The IFRC network connects with diverse populations, ensuring no one is left behind
- Invest in the care workforce
- Adopt a Life-Course approach, investing in health at every age
- Align with @IFRC’s Healthy Ageing Strategy to make informed choices for longer, healthier, and more dignified lives
Humanitarian action plays a crucial role in empowering communities, especially in low- and middle-income regions, to achieve healthy, active ageing for all.
Across borders. Across conflicts. Across decades.
Today marks the 60th anniversary of the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, a reaffirmation of principles that mean the difference between life and death for millions of people.
For 60 years, the Fundamental Principles have guided us to deliver help where it’s needed most. But today, humanitarian action is under threat – from politicization, disinformation, and violence against aid workers. We must protect them.
On this anniversary, we honour both the vision that gave life to these Principles and the unwavering commitment of millions of Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers and staff who bring them to life every day.
We call on all States to respect these principles so aid can reach people in need. The time to act is now.
Respect for the Fundamental Principles is respect for humanity.
At this year’s UN General Assembly our top priorities are:
⛑️Safeguarding humanitarian workers
🌍Acting on the climate crisis
⚕️Confronting non-communicable diseases
Together, we can turn commitments into action.

“In crises, a person with diabetes still needs insulin." This central question drove a powerful #UNGA80 side event co-hosted by @ifrc. Thanks to all partners & states for the commitment to ensure a crisis isn't a death sentence for people with #NCDs & #MentalHealth conditions.
At #UNGA80, during the @IFRC side event on Accelerating Equitable non-communicable disease (NCD) Prevention and Care in Humanitarian Settings, we launched the report of the Global Advocacy Bootcamp on Non-Communicable Diseases.

A pleasure to deliver the opening remarks at our @IFRC side event on Accelerating Equitable noncommunicable disease (NCD) Prevention and Care in Humanitarian Settings on the margins of the #UNGA80. This side event aims to spotlight the urgent need to integrate NCD care into humanitarian response frameworks.
As we look toward the United Nations High-Level Meeting on NCDs and Mental Health, let this gathering drive three shifts the world can act on now:
- Integrate access to NCD and mental health care into emergency preparedness and response plans.
- Finance continuity of care: protect supply lines, support primary care in crises, and strengthen community-based delivery through trusted local actors and community health workers.
- Respect and Protect health personnel and health facilities, ensuring they can operate safely, and patients can seek help without fear.
Let us commit to that future. Let us build a world where no life is overlooked and no human being is left behind.
We stand in solidarity with our colleagues at the ICRC and PRCS in Gaza.
Today, the @ICRC office in Rafah was damaged by an explosive projectile, despite being clearly marked and notified to all parties.
Yesterday, contact was lost with emergency medical teams from the @PalestineRCS and their whereabouts remain unknown.
Civilians and humanitarian workers must always be protected.

Solutions addressing the triple nexus of health, climate & migration should be community centered. Bringing both host & displaced communities in the decision-making process and solutions is key to mitigating the impact of this nexus. #COP29Azerbaijan#COP29Baku
