In the latest MLI paper, “Invisible Internal Trade Barriers,” Ryan Manucha (@RyanManucha) and Joe Noss (@JoeNoss) argue that procurement must be the next phase of reform for federal, provincial, and territorial governments.
“Without action… Canada will entrench a fragmented, opaque system that weakens competition, limits opportunity, and drives higher spending at a time when Canadians can least afford it,” write Manucha and Noss.

In “Blueprint for Internal Trade and Property Rights,” Tim Sargent and Paul Salembier present a special project to realize the economic vision embedded in the Constitution Act, 1867.
Interprovincial barriers still limit labour mobility, investment, and growth across the country. This project goes beyond analysis and provides concrete model legislation to harmonize regulations, enable mutual recognition, and strengthen property rights.
It offers a practical path to a more unified and competitive Canadian economy.

#SenCA
“Canada cannot afford to let internal trade reform progress abate. Interprovincial trade is worth $500-billion and fully within our control unlike the $1.2-trillion relationship with the U.S. CUSMA renegotiations are receiving immense time and resources. At the upcoming Council of the Federation meeting in Charlottetown, Canada’s premiers can choose to supply more of the muscle that’s driven 16 months of progress or let momentum stall,” writes MLI contributor Ryan Manucha (@RyanManucha).

@MikePMoffatt@ruffoloj I’m not sure how narrowly you’re defining barriers. They are non-distance transaction costs on account of an internal frontier. Some examples one might not consider:

@evansammccann You are right to flag the significance of Canadian business history. I’m president of the Canadian Business History Association, a small but mighty group trying to tackle the problem you identify. Would you be willing to connect?
Was on @CBCNews yesterday to digest Nov 19th's pan-Canadian internal trade minister's meeting in Yellowknife, as well as Canada's newest internal trade agreement: the Canadian Mutual Recognition Agreement for goods. Link in comments for my analysis.
Great piece by @ForsterSam on what is at stake re internal trade ahead of tomorrow’s supremely important pan-Canadian internal trade summit in Yellowknife, NWT https://t.co/D6q7uwrBrv
Remarkable survey results from this week’s @the_logic summit. Pairs well w/ historical context from @jdmstewart1’s new book (e.g Laurier & AK/BC border dispute, 1903 -
“We are living beside a great neighbour who…are determined…to get the best in any agreement which they make”)
Powerhouse panel with @VassB , @lucyhargreaves4@RanaSarkar_ moderated by @CappyMc today at The Logic’s annual summit in TO. Ranging discussion underpinned by: achieving greater economic sovereignty.
Internal trade helps drive Canadian prosperity. Today I introduced a new bill to help improve internal trade, supporting the PM and Premiers' joint leadership towards one Canadian economy.
