The Vice Chancellor of Indian Maritime University participated in a high-level meeting with the Vice Chancellor of Rashtriya Raksha University on 21 April 2026, following the inauguration of the MAHASAGAR Academy at RRU, Gandhinagar.
As part of the engagement, the Vice Chancellor delivered a Distinguished Guest of Honour Lecture at MAHASAGAR Academy 2026, reinforcing IMU’s role in advancing maritime education, research, and strategic capacity building.
Discussions focused on strengthening institutional collaboration through joint academic programmes, research initiatives, faculty exchange, and specialised training in areas such as marine informatics, maritime law, marine insurance, and maritime security. The collaboration also envisions structured programmes, case-based research, and skill development initiatives aligned with national priorities.
This partnership reflects a shared commitment towards MAHASAGAR Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions, contributing to India’s evolving maritime ecosystem. ⚓
Deliberations on Day 3 examined key dimensions of contemporary maritime security, including piracy and armed robbery in Asia through the ReCAAP framework, the legal regime of innocent passage under UNCLOS, and the UNODC’s interdiction-to-conviction approach.
The 1st edition of Mahasagar Academy 2026 was held at Rashtriya Raksha University, Gujarat, as a platform for capacity building, knowledge exchange and policy dialogue on maritime security and governance, aligned with the vision of MAHASAGAR – Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.
Shri Satish D. Kamath, Principal Officer (I/c), Mercantile Marine Department Kandla, represented the Directorate General of Shipping at the programme and graced the occasion as Guest of Honour.
During the programme, he addressed the participants and shared insights on maritime governance and regulatory frameworks, reflecting the role of DG Shipping in strengthening India’s maritime ecosystem and contributing to governance in the Indian Ocean Region.
The engagement aligns with ongoing efforts towards strengthening institutional capacity, advancing maritime legal frameworks and supporting India’s role as a responsible maritime nation.
